As I have derailed this thread in for a penny in for a pound. It was this cello stand I was not keen on but it pleased the customer. Made quite a few of the guitar stands as it was a way of making something of value from small but precious offcuts. Both made of Rosewood and maple as it was for the same customer.

I'm glad I blurped about bending with steam if it prompted you to show us your work, to me this has a touch of C.R. Mackintosh inspired design but I may be wrong there... but no matter it's very elegant.

To do fine work like this do you have a carpentry / cabinet maker design background, just curious ?

Go on then, show us something that you've made that you are keen on👍

Spot on with Mackintosh. Never studied design as such so when I got asked to make this in an art-deco style piece I just piled through some art-deco books stealing ideas as I went

Also correct as I worked as a cabinet maker for 25 years before a complete change of tack. Never really proud of my work which is partly why I gave up but always enjoyed the bigger more structural things. Made some nice oak A frames and some stairs for us which I get to use everyday so they are probably my favourite item

That elegant stair just floats, you're very skilled.

But I take you're point about changing tack in life, it's short and to accomplish all your aims, or at least as many as possible, you need to know when to make a change and move on to the next thing while retaining all you're previous skills and using them in another direction to gain more and satisfaction in other pursuits.

I did the same as you and around the same amount of time in life.. I just had to get out the workshop away from the phone and into the fresh air... best thing I ever did 👍

So you were a maker as well?

A maker but not of cabinets, I served my time as an engineering fitter and then set up on my own repairing old stuff and making 1 offs. so mostly all metal then in my forties just to get outside I switched to garden work, odd jobs and any tree work that I could cope with which was much less stressful and led me to working with wood, then I got the opportunity to do some stonework which I found very satisfying and did quite a lot of.. got a small pension now so trying to repair and recover and do some things for me, cheers.

Cant see any demos on the page.     Edit hadn't scrolled down far enough

Saw a luthier at a woodworking show and if I remember right he bent the wooden sides around a hot 'mandrel' ? Dont know the proper term but it was a shaped cylinder that was heated and he worked the wood against it to gently form into the desired curve.  Guess steam may detract from the colour of the woods used?

Only ever steam bent and laminated wood myself to form curves.

This is my Sunday night treat, watching Ted Woodford do an instrument repair or set up or whatever... by coincidence tonight he used his bending iron to repair a Gibson guitar, If you don't want to watch it all { addictive like milling } then skip to 11.20 to see it in action..

Danger.. you may end up enjoying Ted's input every Sunday night therefore causing a weekly diversion in your life.

This is a link to Fylde Guitars latest newsletter:

One of the topics is called 'Bending guitar sides' - Roger's in his workshop and shows how the piece of walnut you produced on your mill gets worked on to produce the sides of a guitar.  Fascinating, I thought, although I did skip a bit...  Have a look.

Hey Dudders I'm glad you started this thread, I've very much enjoyed the response that's emerged so far, I love seeing the amazing quality of others work, cheers.👍
