Protos Muffs Upgrade

I'd like to upgrade my muffs on my Protos. The local arbor supply shop suggested the 3M Optime 98 muffs. They appear to be the correct width to fit into the wishbone, aside from the fact that the 98's have a flange type end on the muff. I'm assuming from viewing images of the X5's, that they they have the same  flange. Did you have to cut/grind that flange off the X5's? Thank you
