Perfect Dan, that's the bit I was missing. Was expecting an overloaded / snapped cable [when dragging a load] to twang like a big elastic band back towards the operator. You are saying it will just flop to the ground hence less need for safety factor.
@Peasgood the ones from Wirax in Poland seem very well priced if I can get delivered to the UK.
Ah not sure I said that, the broken cable can be a severe hazard but at least the thing you're winching won't fall to the ground. Overall less hazardous to winch a truck across a muddy field than to winch it up into the air.

Damned good chance it will, that is why they often have 5m long ropes to operate the winch, at least you are up to 5m away if it does.

That’s also to be out of the danger zone if the tractor turns over whilst winching (not a joke). 
I bought a Tajfun winch with radio control and powered outfeed (both options I would seriously recommend if you can stretch to them) and it is fantastic - very well made piece of kit.
