Ash shake

Big Beech

random question.

Today we felled a leaning woodland Ash, approximately 28" in diameter on the leeward side of a copse.

Tall tree 75ftish.

As we all know, soon as some timber is felled the stress release fractures the timber.

upon the floor after 5 minutes we heard the normal sounds of Ash letting go.

I am hoping to return to the trunk in the next week or so as there is a lovely wide Olive colour band.

Currently the log is approximately 25ft and ill need to cut to remove it in sections from the property.

Normally i throw the logs on to my new milling pile, however i am concerned that once the stick is cut again more stress will be released.

Am I best to be cutting up the pith straight away, or leave for a while as normal?

It’s firewood probably.
With that much t&c it’ll still split sooner or later.
You could leave it in one piece off the ground for 3-5 years til it’s stabilised, but I suspect it’ll pop.
If it’s really nice colour, just mill it and see what happens.
There always resin table makers.

It will probably  have developed reaction wood in response to the lean and will be far more likely to warp / split ..the tree is talking to you 😉   an old timber merchant I knew always used to say if the middle is not in the middle then it is no good !!

The main stem, to that fork is about 22ft and dead straight.
