Sounds like a good plan, are you going to use bucket blade sharpened up?

I don't think I've ever used the 4 way so if your creation is successful I might just steal your idea!

Yes a length of bucket edge & attack it with the bench grinder. One sided points for the ring & two sided for the additions.

Bloke on ebay selling add bits of edge.

Have a look on wearpartsuk.co.uk and look at bargain blades section, has a list of short offcuts around 18", they specialise in hardox so might have something you can use

Already bought a 1m off cut from ebay but thanks for the link.

Be very careful not to compress the timber going through the knife. I made a 28 way for a 60 ton spiltter and it was great on straight grained stuff but when it jammed it took ages to clear it. Ended up scrapping it and making an 18 way. So much better but still a bugger when it jams. Only use it for sticks over 20" now as its not height adjustable so loads of small stuff with smaller clogs.

Thats a bit of a monster.

Yes I will be setting them at a slight angle & using the single sided knife method rather than a two sided wedge.

Keep us updated, I was thinking about it today and I think it's a grand idea, the only issue I can see is if a knotty piece is split and it puts enough pressure on 1 side to twist the splitter knife, without significantly strengthening the trough around the knife to enable support bars to be fitted I'm guessing theres no way round that though

Just the same as now on the 4 way & 6 way.

You often get a log that is one sided & makes the knife try to twist.

The knife holder is quite substantial.

I got a bit further with mine, transit engine now running nicely, and got a right angle gearbox from a round baler that has 6 spline shafts on each end and alters direction of rotation so have all forward gears to choose from on transit gearbox, just have to join everything together now.
