Transplanting a Willow

Hi all,

 

I have a Salix caprea in my back garden (kilmarnock willow) It was here when we moved in and it is planted smack bang in the middle of the lawn. Even though its not big, it makes mowing a pain in the bum working around it.

I dont want to bin it but would like to move it backwards towards the fence and the borders etc..

 

I have just give it a haircut and it looks much better, the catkins are great when they come out.

PS.. Our house was built 5 years ago so I guess it was planted when the first people moved in. we have been here for 12 months but I forgot to ask things like that when we bought the house!!

 

Also, Am i right in thinking because this is a grafted tree it wont get any taller? just bushy?

A few years back, the country was flooded with Kilmarnock willows. I had one (died a couple of years ago) & so did all the neighbours. At about 4' tall now & with a similar spread, four good pokes with a digging spade should have it out. This is the best time of year to transplant.

It will be top heavy & so will need staking.
