Had bought 10 oak sleepers last week for a job and just interested to know why the bandsaw marks go so deep into woodgrain ? Possibly semi dull cutting blade ? Never had this problem with sleepers before But i have taken a fair bit off with a 60 grit belt sander but the marks are still very visible

(Had selected best  ones from suppliers yard so no point complaining)

Deep scores sounds like an off-set tooth being outta whack. When there is hardly a few quids profit in a sleeper it seems like some folk will run their bands till their well worn to maximize production.

You're buying sleepers, so Im not really seeing an issue with what you're buying. If you want them graded or even planed expect to pay for that, or do it yourself.

That is true that they are only garden sleepers but these cost double the price of softwood which always seems to be cut perfectly .maybe processed on a bigger machine? and possibly imported from France or Canada

Yep softwood is better value for money and quality usually  good

this particular job they wanted oak though.very dense and heavy  to cut on a mitre saw but seems to get through on test run .got all ten on a roof rack .could have been a good one for that overloaded thread

Depends on the softwood but it’s not automatically value for money. False economy maybe? I’d want Oak as well as it will still be there long after I’m gone. But it seems like such a waste of a beautiful wood.I’ll assume it’s come over from Eastern Europe? Get it before it’s all gone. [emoji16]

How much where you per Sleeper? I’ve seen Oak as low as £25 each and that’s just criminal.

Yeah these  were not the cheapest @£42 each but not bad quality apart from the saw marks which haven’t completely  come out.have seen them for Under £30 online but not sure what grade/quality they might be .(was meaning to have a look at the travis Perkins ones for £34inc vat ) but anyway high delivery cost not worth it unless buying in bulk . it is easier to pay more and go to the local yard
