Stihl MS880 Generally

Hi my 880 can be a fussy bitch to start sometimes and you just dont want to flood one I always were a leather glove to start it its bitten me back and almost taken my fingers off  ha ha but it sounds like a small 2 stroke motorcycle when going especially when reving it up , I would defo say mine sings not like my carving saw but its defo got its own tune I bet I could tell one going at it down the road ,like others say the colour on the spatk plug is a good tell tale and also check the air filter on my last 880 that got stolen it had the older filter and it would fill up with sawdust quite quickly making the saw a bitch to start the newer ones have a different filter and ad they dont make them any more it could have the older filter it dont take long to unscrew the case and give it a quick clean ,good luck with it and do look after it as they dont mske them any more and I exprect they will be be like rocking horse shit to find .

The MS880/088 will thump like a goodun when revved flat out with no load, it should clear up under load in the cut - just check that the plug is a dark tan to light tan around the central electrode, white is bad and graphite grey is terminal.

The MS880 revs to 11000 or 11500rpm depending on carb, the 088 revs to 12000 and the ones I have ported have picked up faster and been more livelier.

The MS880 won't sound like a small saw, they rev slower and produce a lot of low down grunt.

If it isn't starting well, try richening up the L screw, this may help and expect to increase the idle speed a little as a side effect of the carb adjustment.

Not bad , a bit oily/sooty  , maybe ever so slightly rich . Seen worse .

Not much colour on it to judge but it looks like the end electrode is going tan which is good. Use it a bit more and expect the outer parts of the plug to go black and the inner part to be beige/tan!
