Vented bags

Hi, myself and my partner are new to the logging business. Please could someone give us some advice on an issue we've been having.

Weve been storing our unseasoned logs in vented bags with coverage but we've been getting mould on the oak?  I've attached a photo to show which mould it is

Leave the wood to season outside I  the weather for two years, then chop it up and store in the bags for a further year . Trying to season fresh wood straight into vented bags wont work.

The weather will help season as rain on the logs which then evaporates helps to draw out internal moisture.

Oak takes a long time to season anyway.

Also, try to mic the wood. From a sale point of view, oak on it's own is not a premium firewood!

Thank you for the advice. Is there anything we could do to clean off the mould otherwise seems a waste? 

 

We do mixed bags and hardwood on its own.

Tip them out and leave out . The weather will sort it!

We will try this. Thank you ever so much. 

 

We've bagged up 46 bags ? some are alright some aren't.

I have had this problem in the past.

It tends to happen more often with timber with a high moisture content.

If you make sure there is plenty of air flow around the bags then they should be ok.

You may still find a few logs in the middle of the bag with mould.

I just put them in a separate bag and a few days later the mould will be gone.

Brillant. Thank you for your advice. We have found its only a few in the bags not all of them. But as mould spreads we were worried.

Just a thought - they are more expensive but Bags with mosquito net sides will let more air in than a bag with just vented sides (which are primarily designed for potatoes to stop the skins greening)

I’ve just started using these used stillages from packs of paving slabs I get them from builders merchants for free and from landscaping firms I see out and about ! I only put wood I want to keep separate ( fruit / hawthorn etc ) that I want to use for personal bbq smoker and fire pit probably get 0.5 m2  in them ! Maybe useful for the home owner types for storage as easy moved with a compact ?

I find they dont last beyond one summer,   UV light gets the straps, then the whole lot falls to bits.  Mind you I do move mine full with a telehandler.
