Hi try this guy

Chainsawbars - Largest selection of chainsaw guide bars and chainsaw chain for Stihl, Husqvarna, Echo and Dolmar...

He does all the bars also as there is a mount size to take into consideration also spacing out as 7 tooth 404 is around same size as 8 tooth 3/8 but you have to watch how far bar comes back onto clutch drum. But he will know the figures

am i right in saying that i'll be able to run 3/8 chains but not the same bars as i do on 660 etc?

 

or are those adaptor available that'll allow me to do it?

Yep 660 bar wont fit on an 880, but an 880 bar will fit on a 660 with an adaptor. Unless you machine the 660 bar mounting slot out, 12mm to 14mm IIRC
