Treehog Spikes Modification

Recommended Posts

I went for the budget option a few years ago. They were ok, but yesterday aloft for about 4 hours, they were killing my lower legs. The problem is a metal component eventually makes an indentation in the leather and wool felt pad, and creates a hotspot. I fabricated some inserts out of sewer pipe, sanded the edges, and heated and slightly flattened the end that pads the offending metal protrusion. Now, I haven't tried them, and will need to spend an afternoon on them to report success or failure. Anyone else tried this? Here are some pics.

I’m having the same problem with my tree hog spikes and very painful on the two points just below the knees. I’ve not tried to remedy the problem yet but your idea sounds very good.

Thanks for putting up this post and I’ll have a go with your idea and let you know how I get on.

Cheers Paul. I have used them with the inserts since, and they make the world of difference!

thas a good idea.  I have 2 sets of spikes, a very old Klein pair and a newer Distel pair.  The difference in comfort is like noight and day.
Me too! Cant seem to get off the kleins though. Very positive and secure feelling. Distels feel comfier, but endless gaff outs

yes them Distels do gaff out too easily,  i may have a look to see if there is a medium length gaff replacement option.  The Kleins are sporting pole climbing gaffs that are good for cypress / redwoods or anything with deep soft bark but it's like wearing stilettos (and lip stick)
