it will take at least a year for the timber to air dry at 1-1 1/2" thick.

is it just shelves or a bookcase?

Sorry off topic - but I have always wondered wether to paint the ends of stacked sawlogs right away with an oil based paint if they are not going to be milled for a year or 2 - Se7enthdevil / Big J ?

Always paint the ends IMO. As the wood dries fastest through the end grain you need to slow this or it will develop crack readily. The worst cracks tend to happen right on the centre and the other way I have seen used to deal with this in timber yard are metal cleats hammered in across the cracks to stop them spreading.

I have always painted end when LOG - but never seen elsewhere, which is why I asked ? It's quicker also and you can paint date any species on also, that saves a lot of time later.
