Forestry literature

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for informative books on woodland management and forestry, recently read Chris Starr's Woodland Management which is probably the best so far, but can anyone recommend any others that deal chiefly with forestry in the UK as opposed to internationally? Quite a few that are out there are insanely expensive and libraries won't always stock them, understandably

The Silviculture and management of Coppice Woodlands

Growing Broadleaves for Timber: Forestry Commission Handbook 9

Forest Mensuration: A handbook for practitioners

Managing Native Broadleaf Woodlands.

Forestry For The Agent and Surveyor

The Foresters Companion

That would make a start of a very good bookshelf.  The last one can be hard to find at a sensible price but i picked up mine for about a 5 quid in an Oxfam bookshop and my agent and surveyor one for 20 in the same shop.

A few more to consider for your library.

Like Brushcutter's recommendations, these two are pretty much standard reading for anyone with a serious interest in forestry:

  • The Silviculture of Trees Used in British Forestry, Peter Savill
  • Woodland Conservation and Management, George Peterken

This is a new book, published in 2016, but should be required reading:

  • The Grey Squirrel Management Handbook, Charles Dutton

And whilst non specifically about forestry, these two give a really useful and interesting background to the history of woodland in the UK:

  • Woodlands, Oliver Rackham
  • Ancient Woodland, Oliver Rackham
