On a slightly different tack seeing that photo takes me back to the mid nineties, driving up that road every morning to London, from the bosses house near Horsham.

We were in a petrol transit, me and John, the northern Irishman who would occasionally drink whisky all day. No chipper, bits of paper with the address and job spec, three strand rope, topping strops, pushing the rubbish off with forked sticks at the end of the day as it was a flatbed (it was an old fashioned outfit even for then)

John didn’t like me, I didn’t like John.

The boss (a guy called Derry) was the sort who took the radio out of the vans so we weren’t distracted, had contempt for both of us and the feeling was mutual.

But...... they knew the job, they’d been doing it for years, both had started with Southern Tree Surgeons, later bought by Bartlett’s, and just over a year of working with this happy friendly bunch gave me the basics needed to set sail in the industry.

Nostalgia, it ain’t what it used to be!
