I use the MDL Laser Ace Hypsometer, it's not bad and is good to use as a guide (it can be difficult sometimes to get the laser to hit the very top), They can quite accurately measure DBH and this model will also measure lean of the tree as well as a lot more.:001_smile:

Have a look at Laserace - there is a video on it. I've tried a couple on the market and feel MDL's LaserAce is definitely best value. It has a lot of features, which are really useful.

Fluffy Bunny: there is a 3 point heighting mode on the unit, which uses 1 laser measurement to the tree then goes on angles so you can reach tops of trees which have thin canopy or if there is too much scrub at the bottom, which may distort your measurements... this is a great mode!

Lately I've had a chance to help a guy measure redwoods in northern California. He's been using a Laser Technology Impulse Laser for several years. It's rather precise. On anther tripod, we've been using a prism made by Leica, when the trunk base is around a corner or whatever. We carry a Trupulse 200 with us also.

Thanks for the link mdvaden, the trupulse 360b is nearly £500 cheaper than you can get in this country, we was going to hire one for an application but at those prices we have ordered and are quids in.......

  • 4 months later...

I have borrowed a Laserace hypsometer for a course tomorrow - alas I can't work out how to just calculate the tree height! It's got too many functions!! I don't have my laser disto and clinometer now so am relying on this newfangled kit.

Can anyone shed any light?:blushing:
