First afternoon milling

After many years of thinking about it I did my first chainsaw milling this afternoon. I pulled 3 nice sized pieces of ash out the bottom of the field and up into the yard, a bit of experimentation let me Carry them off the floor with the log arch. 

I built the mill and attached the winch, screwed a timber on top of the log, attached the 461 and...

 

failed to to get any of the log in the mill, it was far too big so I trimmed the side down freehand with my 365,  which made the main log small enough and left a ready to use offcut

i re attached the guide timber, ran out the winch and started cutting. 

I wasn't expecting much with such a small(for milling) saw, but it shot down through the log with minimal pressure after about an hour, including lots of stops to look at things and talk to my mate, I had 3 good boards, the piece off the side and the top slab. I'm really pleased

Nice work, I quite like ash as a timber. It’s pretty hard stuff when it’s dried out. I have a board in my workshop that’s about 8 years old saved for tool handle repairs

Is it just the sides making the top cut look wonky?
