Stihl ms260

I was given an stihl ms260 recently that had sat in a shed unused for a while. It starts and runs fine unless I use the decompression switch first off. That seems to defeat the object of having the switch. Or could it be faulty and not be closing after use ? Any stihl gurus out there ? Because I'm not. Changed the decomp valve now and it starts great but doesn't tick over.......gimme help.

Unscrew it and clean the seat and mating surface  of any carbon or crud and try again .

Clean the carb out if it's been stood any length of time possibly fit a carb kit with diaphragm and needle, set the carb to manufacturer standard (screw H&L in then open up 1 full turn usually) then tweak it from there.

Worth just tweeking the idle screw first .

Possibly down on compression hence why it doesn't like the decomp being used, and the fact that it doesn't tick over.  Seems a likely scenario to me.  

 

Even a extremely knackered saw will run fine flat out, providing you can get the thing started in the first place,  Engine will fade when you get anywhere near tick over.

Or stop when it gets up to temp as the clearances open up to the point were it wont support combustion .

Ive had fantastic advice from forum members on and off line and from that the MS260 is running perfectly. It made very short work of a conifer on Friday and didn't miss a beat.
