These were growing in a cavity about 4mtrs up a Horse Chestnut. I have so far been unable to i.d them despite consulting a couple of books as well as the resident ecologist of Richmond Park. Anybody know what they are???

I think Sean you may have found pholiota tuberculosa the book says darker top to squarrosa. Habitat is decayed wood which is right with what you have. It is defo a pholiota of some sort i would say:biggrin:

Having looked at my Roger Phillips book of mushrooms.........i have no idea.

Closest i can see are maybe a young set of cystoderma cinnabarinum, but i'm not set on that myself, or maybe Russula.???

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable on this site can help you out, Orrrr maybe a variety of Pholiota having just had another quick look????

Cheers for the nod David.......I'm going to climb it again the morrow and have a more examined look at gills/stalk etc.

Tuberculosa not in Jordans encyclopedia although thinking they could possibly be aurivella.???

You might be right there Sean. They yellow to rusty brown if they are they will be slimy or greasy on the cap hmm i will wait till you have had another look:001_smile:

Definatley, Pholiotas

 

definatley NOT aurivella, the golden scaly cap, which has a yellow colouration throughout.

I am green with envy, despite a VERY in depth search i cannot find a satisfactory comparisom, the only one i can think of is the poplar pholiota, which would probably find chestnut wood not discimilar, poor compartmentalisation no heart wood only ripe wood etc. looks a bit dark for it though. whatever pholiota it is, i would get a sample and send it off to kew my friend, this may well be a red data job.
