i had a geoxt with all whistles and bells, kept breaking, then 2 weeks after the end of warrenty it packed up entirely trimble wouldnt do anything about it, despite us have to drive it back to liverpool on 4 seperate occasions,

ended up giving the unit to magellan to pull apart so they could see if they could get any useful info from it!

Trimble are fantastic at making land eng survey equip but unfortunately they fall flat with gps survey hardware, we have had the geo range and got rid of them all we now run magellan CX handhelds or toughbooks with trimble pro xrs backpacks.

If you want super accuracy we have a Trimble 5800 setup with base station and rover which maps at 1mm accuracy, this can be rented out with operator if any one is interested. We also carry out land survey/topo surveys as well.

I use a Trimble GeoXM that is bluetoothed to a Geo Beacon and a Trupulse Laser. The becon gives me less them 1cm accuracy and the lasers is used for gaining height and crown spread measurements.

I then use Wood plan to down load and manage all the data along with Innogistics GIS mapping.

I find that Woodplan does everything I ask of it.

I very much doubt you will ever or have ever got 1cm accuracy, with the dgps beacon you may get roughly 1m and if you have post processing software you may be able to get 45cm if you change the mean to 20 readings which means standing around why the unit calculates the 20x and averages the readings, very time consuming and commercialy unviable #

Also add in tree canopy disturbance to sat tracking will prob knock any accuracy upto 1.3m+

Arborist site, thanks for showing me your unit yesterday mate. I shall be looking into this further ASAP. I don't want to spend big bucks as it's simply not needed. Any complicated or detailed tasks will be outsourced to you anyway ;)

I am getting a certificate in GIS at the University of Cincinnati, and have a student version of ArcGis/ArcView/ArcMap, etc. I have a base map of a region I will be managing, but have only played around a little. I will stay in tune with this thread as I develop. i have had a fair amount of time collecting data however, -attributes, location, and the usual. Not alot of experience actually making things happen with the software. Problem is, i'm a Mac person for life to begin with, so my time is spent more in getting used to my PC laptop, and the OS itself, then into my first ever learning of high tech software, but I'm excited. -Got the software as a part of the course, just an older version #9, but it serves me well. Will need a more accurate GPS unit soon, as my Garmen Etrex Legend won't be suitable.

Thanks,

ACUF
