what sort of turnover do you need to have (selling firewood) to be able to pay yourself £20K a year?

I was thinking some where between £30-35K, That's a lot of firewood to sell for a new business,

yeah, and the rest, the more you do the more it costs and the less space you have

I started my firewood business in spring 09 with a total investment of just under £9K (although I already had pick-up, trailer, 2 chainsaws). That included buying enough timber to process in to about 100 cubic metres.

I will be lucky to break even this year, and that's alright by me. I hope to double the out put next year and contribute towards some of the domestic bills etc

I don't want/need to work more than an average of 25 hours a week throughout the year so hopefully this will all fall in to place for me

We all have different circumstances and requirements from our chosen field of work ..... so most of what we do is down to personal choice based on our own individual values - I've chosen to work less and spend more time with my family

Good luck to everyone else out there selling logs

Well im in exactly the same position i dont need this to make me rich just enough to live on and spend more time with my family:thumbup1:

I got it in my head that you wanted to get going this year cos you bought the van and matbro. I admire your patience. With all those nice new toys I would be itching to get to the battle:biggrin:

Im dying to go into battle and play with my toys but im paid well where i work and need to do this in a patient way and having the van now is all free advertising

my aim is to sell 5 cube a day 5 days a week from oct to march and that should give me the return i need

so 500cube=approx 1000 dumpy bags (as an example)=10bags a day at £50 a pop=£500 a day, 2.5k week, 10k month, 50k oct-march give or take, correct?

-20k wage, -5k return on initial investment=25k for overheads/buying in timber correct?

say 2 cube to the green tonn= 250 tonn of wood needed a year say £35 tonne delivered 250x£35=£8750 sound right? if so the rest of youre money needs to be spent on wood

now youre left with 16k for other overheads/running costs/tax

sound correct give or take?
