Had a phonecall today from a potential client.

Has a few acres of woodland he wants thinning, 124 (grade 5) Oaks and 150 Scot's pines. Has felling Licences, wants them all removing and re-planting.

How much would we pay him for the timber???

It got me thinking, could I make any money from it if I could get a good price on the timber???

Thoughts would be appericated.

Surely that is how forestry works? The landowner gets paid a bit for the wood and the contractor sells the timber, thats normal.

Indeed, plantations are a crop, people get very sentimental about trees and some times they have a higher value standing, but most woodland trees were planted with the intention of felling them for timber.

Most of our stuff goes to Dalcross (Norbord), contractors are usually paid around £16 a ton at roadside, so by the time it is sold to the final customer it must be at least £20 a ton if not more if you consider the estate would take thier share and probably the management company take thier cut also.

What is firewood (birch) making down you're neck of the woods??
