We have a domestic yard area that is just old hardcore with a couple of patches of tatty cobbles. It's fair sized area and tractors and stock run in and out over it so is always muddy and just a bit sick of the mess. Looked at the cost of concrete but winced. Wondering how hard waring tarmac is, what it costs and what prep is required. Maybe other solution we have missed.

Thanks

Various grades of tarmac gangs. Watch out!

Tarmac is rubbish unless done on a superb expensive sub base. Then a good depth of tarmac. Tractor and trailer tyres twist it like a skin and tear it.

A cheap solution is road planings.

Worse than a regular road tarmac? We only have a compact tractor not taking hundreds of horsepower monsters also no turning in the yard just a run through to the back yard that can be a mess. Not tried scalping but used top notch 3/4 to dust to fill holes. It's now relatively level but not the sort of surface you could wash down.

I used to drive a hotbox and we'd struggle to get rid of tar if the boss had ordered too much. Used to rake it out in the yard and roller it. Was rough as .... but was much better than mud. If that's all you need then you could get in touch with the guys who do the utility jobs in the area.
