Has anyone had any experience with wood copy lathes?

Been looking at old ones like Obers on YouTube with an interest in making some axe handles out of ash.

They seem to be a rare enough commodity to get your hands on. Has anyone tried this? Is there a simpler solution that I'm not aware of using a simpler type of machine/process.

Is it not a too difficult project free hand, most copy lathes work by scraping and the finish can be very fuzzy and details lost? Also aren't axe handles oval as opposed to round?

Thank you. It's all in the terminology! Could you put up a link? I've googled but I just want to make sure I'm on the same page in regards description.

I think I'll have to! I would have really liked to get my hands on one of the old single duplicating machine but they're so rare (expensive) by the looks of it. I know the two American makes Klotz and Ober but I don't know if there was a European equivalent. (I'm sure there is but probably hens teeth also).
