I saw a pic of this tree when I was about seven or somethin, Its funny how the memory plays tricks on you..

I had visions of a two lane highway running through that thing. If I had to rely on memory thats how I would of thought of it still till I seen this pic... And yet, look at it, barley wide enough to get a goat through it..

 

 

Still, I'm glad its down. Never sat well with me even back then, to cut a gaping wound in a tree for no good reason.... vandalism at its worst......

 

The "drive through" tree is a different one, mdvaden posted some info

There had been a small cavity at the base before the tunnel went through.

 

My photo of the opposite side suggests there was a gaping wound and weakness on that side too. May add it to my drive through page, but the one side's historic photos get the point across. I think very little structural strength was actually cut in the 1800s.

 

Drive Through Redwoods. Drive Thru Redwood. Avenue of the Giants and Klamath. Leggett.

 

It's doubtful we'll see more of these made anymore. But some land is privately owned.
