Guide bar failure

My 15" Husky bar (running on a 550xpg) has been playing up lately. The nose sprocket got hot and seized up a couple times.

 

It finally gave up properly yesterday with quite a few sparks. No complaints as its done alot of work.

 

I was surprised that the chain didn't snap.... just needs a re-sharpen.

You running Rotatech chain? Seen someone mention they did not carry the oil around the bar well and the bearings nose bearing getting hot. On the other hand my experience of Husky bars is they are made of a cheese and replaced mine with a Sugihara.

I did run a couple of Piranha (aka Rotatech) chains a whole ago and they didn't do the bar any favours, the bar took on that overheated metal look in a few places..... was running Oregon/ Husky chain before that without any issues.

 

I've put on an 18" sugi resin bar now.

Come on mate, that's the original bar that came with the saw yes, so 2 years old? How many chains have you used in that time? What state is the sprocket in!? Buy a sugi pro lite you tightwad!

Hey I'm not complaining mate!

Far from it, it's done a huge amount of work and for all the complaints that husky bars are made of cheese it's more than paid for itself.

 

Yeah it's just over two years old.

I already had a Sugi pro lite (18") waiting in the wings, which I got via MrRob @ Chainsawbars.co.uk

 

First impressions are that the 18" runs great so I may not bother getting a smaller bar for it.

Just for the record I did grease the nose sprocket fairly regularly... probably about ten times in total.

I stopped greasing them about 10 years ago when they used to explode . Never had one fail since . All Sugied up now though ....
