Restocking / Underplanting Western Red Cedar.

Hi,

 

We have almost 1 Hectare of Conifer, which we believe to be Western Red Cedar. Its very dense as has been unmanaged for 20 years.

 

We are planning to progressively thin it out quite significantly leaving small groups (3 - 4) of the better specimens before replanting underneath with some native broadleaf seedlings. Currently Sycamore, Field Maple are being recommended by our local FCA but we also like the idea of Beech and Oak so I guess it will end up being a mix.

 

So to my questions. How many seedlings should I be looking at per tenth of a hectare? Any recommendations for South West suppliers?

Do you have a market for your cedar? I would happily take all thinnings down to 22cm under bark diameter. 3.75 and 5m lengths.

Hi Big J.

 

Sadly they ain't even that big. Most are sulking around the 10-20 cm mark. In places there is less that 2ft between them.

Fair enough! I'd personally consider just thinning them out and growing them on to a marketable point. WRC is a good commercial crop.

Would of probably all been burnt for biomass ! If I had land to plant trees on western red cedar would be a first choice ...it seems to be commanding the highest price as a soft wood when I looked in to buying a load to mill.
