Log Storage

I'm thinking about storing logs so that I can start to sell them next winter. What is the best way to store them to minimise the amount of work to process them?

 

Any thoughts/your experiences welcomed!

Ohhh if only I did own that barn!! would be ideal for log storage but I know if store them in there they will go missing/piss off my boss!!!!

under a large tarp??? keep them (clean) and dry...

i find it best to cut them fresh, then store them. this saves cutting dirty wood later in the year, and is easyer on your chains......

i find it easyer splitting wet wood..

if your going to use a axe (keep it razor sharp)

Not sure what size you're starting with but the bavarian way is what I've stuck with i.e. rung up pieces approx 10" thick, split or smaller rounds split and stacked bark side down = evaporation = faster seasoning.

i dont leave them in rounds to season... as soon as the wood comes into the yard its split and stored, ready to go out for the winter

Don't have time to split it all as it comes in, it just gets satacked on the pile evry night, I have three piles going, and use one up each year, so its a three year seasoning cycle.

But keep them under wraps in the winter.

I split and stack onto old pallets. Keeps the logs off the floor. I'm just starting to cover them having been keeping them completly in teh open.

If you havn't a barn, palletts on the floor and roofing felt on top works fine, felt allows logs to breath better than a tarp, keep the back and front open. I always try to split when green, time allowing

This is how the Norwegian farmers store and dry their logs.

 

Note they also say in Norway that seasoned wood means less than 20% MC.

 

 

Remember, during the winter these stacks are covered in a few feet of snow.......
