Is anyone growing Willow for biomass wood chip.

How are you finding it and what's it costing per ton once harvested?

Thanks

PBI biolfuels have had issues mainly around incorrect planting distances, and the harvester not being able to fit between the rows. The only blocks i know of in our neck of the woods are around bluestone, which as yet i don't think has been harvested. Judging by the large pile that can be seen from the road, they are only processing small diameter softwood.

Iggesund at seascale and metcalfe farms are doing a lot of it. There is a 'willow energy' page on Facebook, I think that's the same people.

We bought a field with 10acres in but it was all planted badly including some trail plots of the wrong species. Metcalfe farms harvested it and iggesund bought it for £32 a ton in the end I think. By the time we'd had it mulched out, paid for harvesting and haulage it didn't cost us anything but we didn't make anything either. Would've needed replanting if we'd continued with it to make it viable.

It's now a grass field. Well worth doing if it's done properly I'd say but we bought it for grazing land anyway.

Thanks for the info. Do you know if there is a harvester for it down our way?

Don't know where you are but metcalfe farms travel all over the place with theirs. Think the driver said all the way from the midlands to Scotland if the crops there they'll cut it!
