carving living trees
what is the prognosis of carving living trees; ie. faces etc only partial cambium --- removal?

Hmm, I've often wondered this too.
What about at the face of a removed limb? If it's cut leaving a stub for some shallow carving would that be an acceptable risk? The tree would callous over the outer edges would it not? Si

We've thought about this too, it would be fascinating to see the tree add it's bit to the artwork when it started to callous. After talking to our Arb friends we decided that if the tree was in decline and not some majestic specimen then it'd be worth considering. We would also consider it if it was fast growing commercial species in a wood. A face on an odd one or two on a trail would add more to the forest than the damage caused to some fast growing non native species with replacements all around it.

I have been known to be quite vociferous, and im about to be again...
carving living trees, to me, is like "territorial p***ing". Walking thru the woods and seeing some sap having carved his name in a tree. Like anyone cares. it is no different if it is "artful". Let the tree be the tree. Carve dead wood.

here is a lovely carving on a live beech by my house.
A love heart. so much love it damaged the tree! If you cant see that the tree itself IS the art, you deserve to work in an office with 4 grey walls.
