Rigidoporus or Perenniporia?

Right you ident Gods out there, which of the above is this? My informed guess is that it's Rigidoporus, but I'm not 100% sure :blushing:.

It's on a large (DBH 90cm +) hybrid black poplar. I didn't get a sample so I don't know what the tube colour is - hence me asking fo help here!!!

The decay stratagies are very different for the two fungi, but it won't make any difference to the tree's outcome. I just would like to know for sure what it is.

The tree's growing along a well used public footway (and no, that can't be moved :001_tongue:) with 25 more similarly sized pops. This one is going to be left as a 6-7m pollard while the others are HEAVILY reduced.

The Myco Gods appear to be off on their bicentenial foray to funky fungi land

So you'll just have to accept the musings of this poor fool in the meantime :001_smile:

.......and pray why did you not have the oportunity to take upon a sample ?

Woulda saved the effort of a thread and the associated doubt.

I would steer toward Perenniporia based upon host, but sure does look a lot like a Rigi.

Doesn't really help you much though :blushing:

I would not make a decision either way without cutting through the bracket to look at the colour of the pours. Clearest way to distinguish between the two fungi is to look at the pour colour.

The following images should provide you with the necessary guide.

Rigidoporus ulmarius has orange/brown pours. Meanwhile, Perenniporia fraxinea has creamy white pours and produces white spores. This can clearly be seen in the images below.

The first three images are of a Rigidoporus bracket on sycamore, and the last two images are of Perenniporia on ash.

Sunday. Day of rest and all that. So I have been ferretting about in the undergrowth to answer my curiosity. And trying not to get arrested for carrying an offensive veggie parer.

And I'm still not sure which it is. Help!!!
