I have a ms231 which after you start it and pull trigger for 1 min revs up fine but tends to run lean. It roars. Release throttle and go again and the cycle repeats High screw is turned anti clockwise all the way, doesn't make a difference if open either Any ideas

Brushcutter/trimmer - Stihl vs Tanaka vs Kawasaki
aidank replied to aesmith's topic in Maintenance help
Is it still possible get parts for Tanaka Hitachi machines. Google says Hitachi purchased Tanaka, and then ceased production few years later. My mates Hitachi 47EJ brush cutter has either a faulty clutch or broken shaft or gearbox, have to get the spanners out. -
It would be for cutting v v heavy grass mixed with briar along electric fence I want it for. What tool would you use for such a job I find regular hedge trimmer quiet good for the job good bit of effort dragging it through the heavy grass and my back doesn't like it thought a long reach trimmer or powerful brush cutter might be easier? I don't need to mulch just cut and leave it

Never used a long reach trimmer but why are bicycle handles unsuitable
-
how did you do the conversion was it worth it
-
how is the Honda going for you, thinking of purchasing...... Is proper 4 stroke easier to start than Stihl 4 mix engines

I did a bit of looking around locally today, Echo Stihl available. Not seen anyone selling Honda or Kawasaki machines yet. For a blade I was recommended a 2hp machine, and would rather not sell me a Kombi machine for using a majority of heavy blade work. Stihl recommendation is a FS240, Stihl FS110 you can put a 500euro hedge trimmer head on it. Hedge trimmer head mounting shafts are too small for FS240. Hedge trimmer attachments are not really recommended for a 2hp machine. Id still like to buy a 2hp machine one though where i could swap the strimmer head for a hedge trimmer or pole saw end if anyone has any recommendations.

Is it possible remove strimmer head and fit hedge trimmer to an FS461 Why would you say combi tool is painful - too heavy ?

im trimming under an electric fence, ride on not possible, wish it was cant use tractor and hedger cutter during growing season

I want to buy a Multi Tool Combi for the upcoming season. Will mainly be used for trimming heavy long grass and brambles. Thus I guess I need a powerful machine. Considering the multi tool rather than standalone as would like to have the hedge trimmer attachment and blade. I have a FS55 Sthl, which is ok for light grass but if it see a bramble cord just breaks. And i guess i will need a decent harness too. What does the general forum recommend. I will utilise for 7-8hrs a week during the growing season and I hope to have it for the next 30years. I have a Maryuama Hedge Trimmer and Tanaka leaf blower, both 20years old, both start first pull. I have the FS55 Stihl trimmer and a 5year old Stihl chainsaw, 16" blade, ms231. The Stihls need regular tuning of the carbs, and its not like they are overworked. 25hrs a year each. New or SH considered if anyone has anything suitable

Some good info there thanks. If carb was leaking as you mention then I think it would never start as you say. If spark plug gets wet then there is no option but to dry it off. Had that problem and repair shop put in new seals in the carb a year ago or thereabouts. Told us modern petrol eats them. We are starting perfectly saw gives a cough on pull 3 or 4 with choke closed and then open choke and will fire up first pull. That is how it performed when new. Don't have any oily residue around the flywheel had all that exposed yesterday when I was replacing the pull cord I see carbs on eBay for 15 20 euro are they genuine or worth bothering with
-
Sparkplug in perfect condition I had it out earlier At the start of pull it is easy then compression builds up and it gets v hard. Once over this tight bump, Cycle repeats 3 times approx and cord is fully extended.
-
The pull cord is difficult to pull to get it to start. Its when it gets to top dead center as you are pulling the cord it gets difficult pull the cord,

I have a Stihl ms231 and it's hard to pull. I took out the spark plug and it freewheel over. 4 5 year old saw not a lot done. Had carb seals replaced a year ago petrol eats them apparently Idles perfectly Starts perfectly it gives its cough after 3 drop starts same as when new. Flick the choke and then it will start first pull. It was over revving last day I used it so I gave the H screw one turn anticlockwise and going v well now. Any ideas on the hard to pull over

When you are using a long reach trimmer do you wear a harness same as you would for regular strimmer work or do you use it freehand, the work I would be using it for would be at waist height or thereabouts but would be 5ft away from where i am standing.

anyone ever used this shortened version of a long reach trimmer Jomac HT260 Short Reach Hedge Cutter (johnosullivanplant.ie) is it any better than a regular trimmer

Im in the market for a long reach hedge trimmer, would like to go the ebay route. What would be recommended, wont be doing a lot with it, 4-5days cutting of thick as finger griselinia hedge in the year, and some long grass under an electric fence. I nearly prefer Japanese stuff rather than Stihl, have a Maruyama HT230 trimmer and a Tanaka blower and start first time and keep going. Mitsubishi didn't know they made tools, Mitsubishi l reach hedge trimmer, Made in Japan , very good condition not stihl | eBay Any brands to avoid ? Have a Stihl FS55 strimmer and chainsaw MS231 and both need trips to dealer regularly for a service to keep idle speeds set correctly. All those machines I mention above are 2stroke, is 4 stroke to be avoided ? obviously will be running long reach hedge trimmer at all angles.

what would i need to do to correct the choke issue
-
3 psi - was i to remove carb and blow into it via a bit of tube would my lungs nearly produce adequate pressure for that ?
-
I guess I was wondering should it make any difference which position the choke position is in during my 20minute trek
-
A few mths back I had starting problems with a Stihl MS231. 2018 saw, not a lot of work done. Its supposed to start as follows. Close Choke and pull a max of 3 times. Within these 3 times it should jump to life and run briefly, ~0.5secs. (If you dont get it to do this brief run it will not start, regardless of how many times you pull or choke position) After the 0.5sec run as mentioned above open Choke and pull again. It should fire up within 3 pulls. it pretty much always does. When it was running correctly it would perform as above. Over time a problem developed that it would not run briefly with the choke closed, and eventually it would get flooded from pulling it, and spark plug would get wet. Spark plug would then have to be removed and dryed and chainsaw pulled a few times with plug removed to clear out the flooding from the cylinder. Problem got worse over time and if saw was left idle for even a day it would flood itself. Fuel appeared to be making its way from fuel tank into the cylinder and wetting the spark plug first pull. Dropped it to the local shop and replaced all filters and spark plug, no better. Back to shop again and replaced seals in carburettor. - All was now good, and it ran fine for few weeks. idles are all perfect v well tuned actually. I filled petrol tank in yard on Saturday and started without issue - was actually thinking to myself seal replacement was a great job. I left it run for a min and switched off. I then had to walk 1 mile carrying saw with a full tank of petrol, 20min walk, as you can imagine saw is tossed about from me carrying it. Tried to start and found saw was flooded and would not start at the end of my 20min trek, and required spark plug to be removed and dryed. Same again on Sunday morning........ I guess im wondering is it normal that the shaking and tossing about during my 20min walk could allow petrol into the chamber, or is there something still wrong in the carburettor. its probably time for entire new carburettor is it ? Its a Zama Carburettor
