I am sorry this isn't about a chainsaw but I have had such great help on here in the past I think it's still the best place to ask.

I have a Husqvarna 122HD60 hedge trimmer.

It didnt run so well so was servicing it - cleaned out carb, reset L and H etc...

I also cleaned the air filter. it's a sponge one so I washed it very thoroughly and left it to dry on a radiator for 2 / 3 days. It was bone dry when I put it back on.

It pretty much fixed it but while I was doing it I noticed that with the air filter off it ran better than with the air filter on. Noticeably faster and more easy revving.

Is the air filter no good and need a new one? or is the answer - of course it runs better with the filter off what did you expect?

I am wondering what to do.

Once I put the OEM coil in it it works absolutely fine.

So thanks @adw for taking the time to read and contribute.

Actually I might sell it even if it gets fixed and still buy the Hyundai.

Don't worry I am very very close to droping the thing on ebay for spares / repair. The OEM coil is the last try.

If it ges junked I am going to get a Hyundai 6220. 3 year all inclusive platinum warranty and then if it goes wrong it will go back and I will just ger another cheapo. I am not a heavy user.

I could do with a bigger machine cos there is a large oak trunk down on my friends land - about 6m long and about 33 inches across and he says I can have it.

I got some alkylate fuel.

I had to get the Stihl one called Motomix becuase all three Husky dealers in a 25 mile radius from me don't sell the Husky fuel. I am not sure how you are supposed to buy it if the dealers don't sell it.

Anyway there are about 3 trillion stihl dealers locally (not that much of an exaggeration) and they sell 5l fro £20. OK that price would qualify as a crime against humanity but it's about the same price as the Aspen etc and at least I can get hold of it.

I've out it in the Husky hedge trimmer and it's made, in my opinion, a big difference to the starting and running.

So I will use it in the chainsaw if that ever gets fixed  - still waiting on the part from the Husky dealer.

i intend to use super from now on and make sure there is no ethanol in it

it lasts longer without going off too

i have tried to see this clearly

1) a lot of the mucking cost and fuss is down to my ineptitude - But I wanted to learn and this has been fast learning 

2) some of the stuff can go back especially the aftermarket coil which was sold as 435 suitable and if it’s not then they can get stuffed 

3) some stuff like a spare carb will be handy to have 

4) my brother in law is a big chainsaw man and advice was that  the cheap ones are nevet as good as you think they are going to be and stay with Husky or Stihl if I can 

5) given 4 being the case then I would have to spend min £250+to get a new one and the repair will have been about £60

6) once this is fixed it’s had such a service that surely it will last for a bit

7) I had an einhell one long ago and it was Thomas Tit

but this is the absolute last throw of the dice for it though

OK @adw £39.50 of OEM ignition coil from Husky dealer on its way.....

They cross referenced it against the serial number on the plate so its without doubt 'the' coil.

Nah there’s loads of daft people on eBay who will pay dollar for a knackered Husky?

especially if they knew it’s fine pedigree

Yes but then it just goes back under warranty 

and I will get a fair few bob selling the husky for spares/repair -as long as they haven’t read this forum obviously 

You can get a 62cc 20inch bar Hyundai on amazon £157 extra chain, carry bag 3 year warranty...

yes it’s made in China and won’t be as nice as a stihl but I am just a homeowner

I have had the muffler off taken the plug out and taken the rope off

you can turn it easy by hand and the magnet coming round to the coil happens exactly when the piston is at the top....

Are mculloch ones any good ?

The backfire is a big backfire 

Hold the phone

now runs like a dog it backfires and dies when you touch the throttle (although it’s not idling properly anyway) doesn’t get up enough speed to engage the clutch

ive changed the carb - I now own 3

ive changed the plug

i have taken off the flywheel and made sure that the keyway is intact which it is and done the flywheel back up to the required torque

ive checked the air gap

ive changed the fuel - again

when turning it over by hand with the plug out a puff of smoke comes back out of the air intake on each downstroke of the piston

back to square 1

I know I am being a grumpy old man but I still think that for a premium brand charging premium money It’s poor to fail like this.

the coil has no moving parts and doesn’t get desperately hot - I am sure they could have specified a more reliable one if they wanted

ive bought a £10 amazon replacement - it will be very interesting to see if it lasts longer than the OEM one

Huskys are 'OK' I guess

At least now I know this one like the back of my hand so should be able to maintain it for a long time.

It was the coil (or the HT lead connected to the coil)

Even though the coil was supposed to be good - there was a spark when the plug was grounded and the coil tested to 0.5ohms like Husqvarna say it should and the air gap was set correctly... it was the coil.

I took off all the stop start wires so they could have nothing to do with it.

Put on a new coil and it started.

Put the old coil back on and it didn't.

So either the coil went or more likely I think it was the HT lead on the coil.

So massive lesson learned for me - try the starting fluid early becuase that can really give a big clue and its easy and cheap.

Thank you all for your help and patience - I am defo no expert but I have learned something that I won't forget in a hurry and hopefully people in furture will read this thread and it will help them too.
