  1. Hi mate. Thanks for the reply. This was pretty much my plan but was going to use a grigri to be able to descend. How do you descend on a prussik? Surely when it's loaded you can't get the weight off it to move it down? Good shout on putting the prussik on the lanyard, presumably that's so it's adjustable?   2. Hi All I've got some rock climbing experience but looking to try a little casual tree climbing to maintain trees in our woodland. I understand the ascent equipment and technique and will probably use a prussik and grigri but once I want to be able to move down from my anchor and generally move up and down working the tree what equipment would I use? My first thought was the grigri, I could belay down and ascend back up at will but as far as I'm aware it's not a hands-free device so I either have to tie it off or secure myself to a limb near by. Just wondering how you guys do it? Thanks Toby

  6. Hi both. It was my plan to buy a bigger saw when I can afford one but I have only just bought the ms260 and can't justify another saw quite yet since it's just a hobby. I was hoping that the 260 would be powerful enough to mill what I have at the moment which is larch approx 12inches across. I was planning to take it easy. It's just a hobby so I can take a break between each plank to let the saw cool down a bit. Do you really think it will be bad for the 260 if used as set out above?   10. Morning all I'm considering getting into milling, just for personal use. I was planning to build a cheap DIY mill using thick plywood and threaded bars etc. But I'm wondering if I should buy a mill like the one below. I appreciate it may not be quite as good as the grandberg but an equivalent size grandberg would be atleast twice the price and I can't justify that given it's hobby use. At first I would be milling with my ms260 but then looking to buy a bigger milling saw in the future when funds allow. Does anyone have any experience with the below mills? Alternatively does anyone have a mill for sale?
  11. My cap was also leaking and I think it was a non genuine which the previous owner fitted. Replaced it with a genuine one and it stopped leaking. It's still leaking from below the saw though. It comes out where the wrap around handle screws in. I found when I removed the screws that the threads were covered on bar oil.   12. Hi all. I've got an oil leak from the bottom of my MS260 (2002 model) seems to be coming from underneath, between the oil tank and the clutch plate. I'm thinking that its probably a perished oil supply pipe, either the one between the oil tank and the oil pump or (less likely) between the oil pump and the oiler. Given that the saw is now 15 years old a perished pipe seems pretty feasible. I'd like to replace both oil pipes but can only seem to find non-genuine parts and would prefer to use genuine. Does anyone know where I can get one or how I can find the part numbers? I can't find any exploded diagrams etc which tell me the part numbers. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks Toby
  13. Morning all. Rather than starting a new thread, does anyone have any views on wood wizards comments above? I am going to build a very small homemade Alaskan for my ms260 and I'm wondering whether to refile a spare chain to 10degrees or try to find a ripping chain? This is only a little experiment to see whether I use it much.   15. I'm not sure. I was wondering whether the presence of the wire meant that the spur had worn in a slightly odd way? There's still an ever so slight catch of the chain roughly every 7 drive links so maybe that is the residual effect of the spur having worn unevenly? It's almost undetectable though. Not sure but for the time being I won't be replacing the spur since it doesn't seem necessary now! I have however got a replacement (genuine) oil cap on order to replace the leaking (3rd party) one it came with. Thanks again chaps. Sent from my SM-G930F using Arbtalk mobile app
  16. All, thanks for all your advice on this thread, much appreciated and I've learn allot. Turns out that all that fuss was caused by a tiny piece of plastic coated garden wire caught under the 'washer' which sits over the clutch drum/spur sprocket. Photo below showing it! Only discovered it because I decided to take the clutch drum off to check that there was actually a functioning needle bearing in there! The saw must have picked this up with it's past owner since it has only been used in pretty wild woodland by me! Chain is now running super silky smooth! Thanks all!   21. Ok, having spent a while turning the chain by hand I think there is a pattern of roughly every 7 drive links. Therefore I'm thinking that the sprocket is to blame. Although it doesn't seem massively worn and the wear seems even but I'll change it and hopefully that solves it! Also checked that the clutch drum is spinning freely and it is. There also doesn't seem to be any meaningful play in it. Also checked that there was nothing binding with either chain/bar combo and that's fine too. It is definitely caused by tightening the bar studs down though which I can't understand; I can't think how the sprocket and bar nuts would have any effect on one another? Chain tension doesn't seem to have anything to do with it... 🤔 Sent from my SM-G930F using Arbtalk mobile app
  22. Hi. Yes, I have tested for several full rotations but I don't think I can notice an obvious pattern. I'll have another thorough look tonight. Sounds like a rim sprocket would be a better solution anyway so will speak to local dealer about it.
  23. Thanks Stubby. In that case, given that the clutch drum spins freely, it looks like it's either the wear on the spur sprocket that's causing the issue?
