I was in a similar situation 3 years ago, bought the mill and used it in the yard for a while. Then used it to build the shed it sits in, then a little workshop, then my wife’s cabin in the garden, then extended the cattle shed, did a few mantles from oak, cut masses of strainers and other fencing gear,etc etc. It’s been a smashing bit of kit, well worth the money, I’ve had literally nothing go wrong with it. Currently looking at stump grinders and considering the woodland mill version purely off the back of experience with the mill I had of them. Go for it, you won’t look back!

Thanks for the comments so far. I'm aware I'm looking for top quality saw logs, however I'm surrounded by woods full of them that seem ready for felling. I wrongly assumed that for the right price (probably over the odds compared with what the mills are paying) I'd be able to buy a small quantity from a local operation. Going through agents has been a non starter and just takes loads of time. Local mill doesn't want to sell stuff that size. Lots of stuff around us has already blown over! I bid on a wood 50m from our fields last year to buy, went 10k over the asking price as was mega convenient and was still outbid. Lot of wind blow stuff laid in it before sale now it's got about 20% still standing with no one doing any management whatsoever. Is there something I'm missing? I know I'm not from the industry so there might be something obvious. Have no trouble getting hold of logs to the same spec but limited to 12' lengths as the feller won't handle anything longer. Is it weight? Trouble with cranes at that length? H+S aspect? Different felling licenses? Got a guy with 250acres nearby who can fell them but now says his crane can't lift them. Does that sound reasonable or an excuse for not having correct license or experience? All honesty appreciated.

I've been messed about quite a few times recently either by timber suppliers or hauliers or middlemen promising then not delivering so in a bid to get what I want and cut the chain down as short as possible I thought I'd post here and hope someone can help. I don't want to come to site to look at the trees or source hauliers or unload an artic at the roadside or take it in 3 ton loads at a time. Please read all the information. I want a wagon and drag load (approx 25t, no artic access, decent access for rigid body) of Douglas fir saw logs mix of lengths but from 16' to 22' (exact details given as needed) minimum top diameter 12". Ideally maximum butt diameter 30" but can work around this if needed. I have cash waiting for good straight logs delivered to NE65 8DA in the next month. Does anyone know a timber haulier with a wagon and drag or other non artic wagon who operates in the Alnwick area. Looking to move about 30 ton but can't get an artic wagon into our yard. Been offered collecting in a standard 8 wheeler tipper from a local guy who brings us planings and stone but not sure how much weight I'd get in and wether it would damage the butts when tipped? Any suggestions appreciated.

I bought one of these mills earlier this year and it's working well for me. If I need to mill bigger than the capacity I've just used the Alaskan to take it down to suitable size. For me not knowing a huge amount about mills or milling I'd rather go new and basic. Compared to what was available second hand it seemed the best option. Easy company to deal with too although you'll need to register for eu vat refunds if your not already, only found out about this when I tried submit vat return to accountant and he pointed it out which means delay in getting the vat mans slice back. If anyone wants to try one out before buying your welcome to come and do an hours work for free here seriously though I don't use mine often so if anyone would like to have a go they'd be more than welcome.

I'd be interested in this if its not sold. Is it still standing? What length could you get out? I'd want to cut stem in half if possible and mill at home.

Now, Can anyone tell me the easiest/cheapest way of piping up a rotating grab on my yanmar b25v? Is it as simple as connect rotate into hammer circuit connections and use the foot pedal to rotate then use crowd ram pipe for grab? How much could I expect to rotate? Ie could I load 300kg logs onto the mill with it? It'll lift them fine but not sure how much work to rotate that weight? Cheers for any advice.

Got the mill up and running today..lots to learn but loving it!

Had cooper discovery st on my isuzu for past 50k and still a bit left on them. Crap off road as pretty much all road legal tyres are but otherwise a good buy. Mpg went down by 3 on average compared to Goodyear or Bridgestone at.

Ended up ordering the woodland mill...should be here next week. Will post a pic when I get it set up

So I've finally got £4k (not including vat) together to buy a band saw mill. Need (or want) it for milling cladding, decking, posts, etc for self build plus farm use fencing, sheds, trailer floors etc. Don't need anything with a massive capacity, must be portable or small enough to fit in a shed 28' max length. Must be petrol or diesel powered engine. Ideally with a length capacity of 20' although I'm happy to build bed extension if needed. Need not be super quick, Ive been using an old 045/20" bar/mini mill combo so whatever I get will be a huge jump in efficiency. Options seem to be small knackered second hand Peterson, woodmizer or Norwood or new woodland, hud-son etc. Which would you buy? Cheers, Lee

Need me one of those! What's the mpg like? As disastrous as I imagine (15ish?) What's it tow on normal hitch?

Hope the rack saw goes for that money...got similar one here powered with a combine engine that I'd like to move on! Saw the woodmizer a few days ago but think its a bit too much compared to new hud-son etc.

Cheers Jonathan, that's me knackered too then. Will have to look for tachometer for my d max. Know loads of people in same boat as me that don't use tachometer either. Speaking of lunacy and laws.. Recently got pulled on a1 with 3 contrete pipes on trailer. Plod saw 1200kg on last section of pipe so pulled me as was 'obviously overloaded'. Pipe was 1200kg total and plod couldnt see it was cut into 3 despite my rough cuts. After getting past that he checked my license and decided I shouldnt have the right to pull a trailer as I past car test in 97 so no grandfather rights despite them being on my license from older motorcycle license. Then made me leave trailer, go and get wife who hasn't towed anything and after checking her license made her drive the truck home with him following. Later got a letter saying all checked out with dvla and license is fine. It was dark, raining and an awkward load with an inexperienced driver compared to me who tows every week. madness! Sorry to derail thread anyway.

Sorry if I missed something obvious but what's the deal needing a tachometer with towing further than 50km? I do it every week and now I'm worried?

It's a scam, lots of tractors on eBay and gumtree etc the same. Nearly always american pictures copied from other websites. If in doubt when thinking about buying something that may seem too cheap do a quick google images search. You may be surprised to see the very item 3 or 4 pages in on someone's blog/website.

Hi john, prices from Fraser robb who is the local agent for us. Haven't had anything back from just saws. £75 to add for delivery and 10 days lead time. Still unsure what to go for myself. Woodland mill is cheaper for better spec I think and look good but would rather hear it from someone who has one in the uk first.

I maybe being naive but hoping mechanicals would be the same as most I.e. Get bearings, runners, guides etc from local industrial supply. B and s motor should be fairly easy for parts and trouble free or easy to replace. As a complete novice, are there parts on little mills that will be taking more hammer than others? Won't be putting lots through and very little would be hard wood. Mainly Douglas and larch for my own use. Assuming the small motor and manual feed would be the indicator of working too hard so could just back feed pressure off a bit? Thanks for the advice, assume I'm an idiot and you won't be disappointed!
