  1. did you get it from Wales? Either way pics please, let me know how it goes. Don't forget the blue compression button when starting, like what I did... better still download the manual. Mine went great after I had read it.
  2. Update then. What a great saw. Revs very nicely, starts easily. Tweaked up the oil pump a couple of notches, more bar and chain left than I thought especially now it isn't running dry, 15" Husky bar, which should do all my logging and a few trees until I buy a sugi hara and send it to spud for my birthday. Had a warm start problem, blew on the fuel filter, it fired up then, and so popped in a new one, sorted and set up nicely now. Bought from a guy in carmarthen south wales who services up old forestry commission saws, new piston, plugs, etc. Good deals. Sells them on gumtree. Very happy with mine. You might need to make a few tweaks, but try finding better. husqvarna 254 xp petrol chainsaw | Burry Port | Gumtree
  3. Husqvarna 254xp. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/chainsaws/70103-husqvarna-254xp-best-used-ground-saw-under-150-a.html
  4. bloody hell that 254 screams.
  5. eBay is fine, and so are other sites, though I will agree ebay has gone a bit mental lately for chainsaw prices, it's all about basic trading skills and using some old common sense though. I have picked up some good buys from ebay, including chainsaws and just picked up a nice Husky from gumtree from a nice chap in wales who refurbishes old forestry commission saws, he still has some bargains if anyone is interested. So, to anyone who disagrees, it's alright for me. Example: Old stihl 028, bought for £100 from a genuine ebayer (there's a difference). Put on new bar and chain, sweet, lasted me a year earning over a grand and chopped up all my fire wood, with ease. Oil pump blew this winter, bummer, but sold it for spares for £75, sold bar and chain £30, added £45 and got a capable old pro Husky. We can't all be given, find, or afford some of the great newer examples we see on here, but there are some great older saws about on ebay and the like. Happy hunting, keep on revving!
  6. North West, Cheshire... wisewood has first dibs on it though. Thinking if could get some planks out of it they could be the base for a teepee or floor for a summerhouse?
  7. I saw that, and a dolphin on the right end half, more likely it's going to end up just a big stick Crocodile would crap the wildlife up a bit.
  8. It's been down about 2 years. I picked up a new client last Autumn and there it was at the bottom of their garden. The client is a keen logger and had taken the top for firewood, but now I have started on their woodland mgmt they have enough wood for their log burner for five years already, so... Could it be milled on site, with an Alaskan mill, to get some planks out of it?
  9. I mentioned this in another thread. What would you do with this? Any Ideas? Seems too good for just firewood.
  10. Those are refreshing to hear. Good on you two, get that experience under your belt. In answer to the threads question then, look for a couple of young dudes like these two, pay them what you can, and train them up. Very nice work tree_kid, superbly subtle, I had to look twice.
  11. Anyone in the North West up for this? Cheshire area. I picked up a client last year with a big, big, beech already down and we are looking to do something with it. Maybe planks for summer house, or for base of a large teepee?
  12. All of the above, tell him you'll have a go at it. Then you take lots of pictures, post them up here, and ask the guys with the experience to talk you through it. Maybe even one nearby will pop over and have a look at it for you. And, insist on the best groundie in the crew to work on it with you Unless it's that bad, we don't know, post pictures.
  13. mmmm thanks for the reminder, the last time I used someone else's Husky it broke, I'll try and be gentle... ...so Spud how many pennies do I have to save to get mine like that? Pm if need be. Shipping back and forth is not a problem I use hermes £10 each way.
  14. Thanks Spud, I had this in mind too. 357xp was on my list but then I thought 254xp modded would be as good. I will save some pennies for the summer and let you know
  15. Thanks all. Feels good to have it confirmed, though it's comments like these in older threads that made me choose it. Just couldn't see anything up to the job under £150, with prices, especially on ebay, having shot up since xmas, even for non running machines, due to the crazy storms. Good time to sell your stihl 026 on there div_h Thanks for the welcome. I will put it through it's paces this week logging up next years, and the year afters wood for the log burner, and report back. At this rate I'll have to sell some logs next winter! Nature provides
  16. Hi y'all, I've been browsing this forum for a couple of years as every time I searched for some advice it lead me back here, so about time I joined, and big thanks to all who have helped loads already then. Let's see if I have been listening then. My trusty old Stihl 028av blew it's oil pump last week and was going to cost too much to repair (once I had sourced the parts), so I had to find a replacement groundsaw with only a £150 budget, but a bit better/a bit lighter than the 028, and after much deliberation and searching I have gone for a 254xp (I finally have a husky!!!!) ex forestry commission saw, been refurbed, stripped and cleaned, new piston ring, seals, gasket, serviced with new plug and air and fuel filters, ready to go. I'm a freelance small estate manager and do the groundwork for an arborist mate half a dozen times, or so, in the winter, and have a log burner too, so it will get some stick, though nothing compared to some of you guys here for sure. All other saws I would have liked, stihl 026, Husky 357, 264, 346, a couple of which I have used in the past, all go above 150, 200-350, unless you get lucky, barn find, dead grandad etc, so I think I have got the best saw I could for the money, and will do the job for years. So, did I do good? ps any good for porting Spud, could it be on your bench one day? And anyone after Stihl 028AV spares, pm me, might break it.
