  1. Went and purchased the Viking 650 VM this morning from the local Stihl/Viking dealer, purchased it for £620 with a free service. Sadly after the 3rd time of starting her up, the pull cord has so recoil. Had a quick look and there doesn't seem to be an easy fix, so bad to the dealer tomorrow Not a great start that!
  2. I've a real interest in Viking after reading back on these forums, with the Viking MB650VM taking a lead, FR Jones as per norm coming in favourites for the order edit: Please tell me the stupid delivery rule isn't there with the Viking lawnmowers?!
  3. Hi there, Looking at purchasing a new lawnmower for our 500m2 sized garden. It's a new, flat lawn, but it shared with 10 chickens and 20 odd fruit trees. I like the grass to be around 50mm as it does well with the chickens then, when it was cut shorter it didn't seem to cope as well. I much prefer to mulch so that's an element for a new purchase, but with the grass being 50mm will they cope well? I've a budget of £1000 if needed, but I'm not against spending less if there's no need to spend the full budget. I'm looking at purchasing one that will last for years as it's not something I want to purchase a new one every few years . I've a Hayter Spirit 41 currently, but it struggles with any kind of damp grass and it's becoming a pain in the behind, making it much more of a chore than it needs to be. Part of my thinking was purchasing a dedicated mulcher and using the Hayter for when the grass has had a growth spurt.
  4. I though I should update this with a quick picture of how it looks now! 600 native hedge plants later, 40 tonnes of soil, 20 tonnes of compost and here it is. We now have 15 fruit trees, 8 in the nearest part of the photo and 7 new ones at the far end of the garden. The nearest part is a couple weeks old wildflower meadow, so only grass growing thus far, but a few weeks or months there should be a lot more colour, I've also made a couple of strips of wildflowers road side where there was only bad grass last year. Where we levelled the garden with compost the grass is a million times better than the old soil. 20 chickens are now doing their best to compost the whole garden, and as a 5-10 year project it should come along nicely.
  5. I have to agree with everyone's comments above, and I'm just a home user. We purchased a house with massively overgrown leylandii hedges and trees, and chopped them all down as first business to replace them with a native hedge. After a years drying, we've had two years worth of lovely free leylandii heat in the stove, and I'd quite happily purchase it in future for a good price, nothing wrong with it at all.
  6. I'm on Oswestry area and I'd happily chip in on purchasing 1-10t, I'd imagine there must be a few that use the A5/A483 for runs, and I'm only a couple miles off the A5 with good access.
  7. Still looking for a few tonnes around Oswestry if anyone is able to help?
  8. If I'm honest, if I read the blurb you have on your site about hardwood/softwood it would put me off buying. Stating softwood should never be burnt for firewood is borderline libel.
  9. If you're happy to quote for it, I'm happy to listen . I go to Kidderminster once every 6 weeks or so, but the trailer is only a 750kg one.
  10. Have far would you consider delivering? If you could PM me a price for delivering a much as possible to Oswestry that would be great.
  11. Log store was cheaper/better than fencing for border privacy, and we can easily go through 10m3 a season. The fact a few friends will come and take some too, means a good amount drying is better than having to worry is there enough for more than a couple of years of burning.
  12. I'll let you have that one as the main post and my profile didn't have a location. Updated now
  13. Good morning, Having contacted a couple of local companies that don't want the hassle of spare wood after a job, I've been looking at other sources of cheap or better still free wood. I'll be building a log store with an easy 30-40m3 capacity in the next month or so, and need to start looking at filling it. If anyone has anything going spare, be it free, well priced or in exchange for the highly prized beer tokens I've a trailer soon to be waiting for the nod. If selling, also looking for cord, and would be interested in tonnes of the stuff. Cheers guys and hope the weather stays like this, as I'm planting a 600 bare root hedge
  14. I'm just around the corner in St Martins if you ever have another offer and don't want it in future, have a bit of land to store too.
  15. Decided to bite the bullet and with living so close to IW we ended up ordering a P6E with a full cage for a rounded £1k. The resale values seem so high it made sense spending so much in the first place. Three weeks waiting now though!
  16. Here's one from Slovenia, I've a few more as weirdly enough I do seek out woodstores when abroad too.
  17. Cheers guys, phoned him back and pulled my interest. Time to save some more and buy a 'lifer'. Wanted add here we come!
  18. That's given me food for thought! He's asking £300 for it, so I imagine I did well posting on here first! First glance I just assumed all double axled would be braked, but it doesn't seem the case when I asked him about it. Living down the road from Ifor it would be lovely to have one, but with a budget not keen on going North of £300 I won't be able to even buy a side of one.
  19. Good morning Since we've come to the point where we need a trailer for dump runs, moving a few things from house to house and such, I've just started looking for a trailer the last few days. Since there seems to be a rather large degree in price and quality it's a bit of a mine field! I found a trailer for sale locally, and was wondering if the pricing is about right before going to look at her tonight. All I know is : 8ft x 5ft trailer not braked Stainless steel frame with aluminium sides and bottom. Great condition. Not known operating weight, but only ever used for 1 tonne. No jockey wheel which is small pain, but easily add one for £30. Going to view it tonight, and should it be in fairy good condition, what's a fair price to pay for a trailer like this? Pictures sent are:
  20. Hi there, sorry for a slightly muddled post but I've a relative that's just been taken ill. Having purchased a house with a little bit of land, we where faced with the nightmare of the previous owners letting everything over growing. 6ft wide leylandii hedges shadowed by anti-social leylandii trees and a jungle of no idea what plants. Having done most of the work of clearing it, we where faced with going into Winter with a messy lower garden full of broken roots, twigs and uneven broken clay soil. This resulted in a Winter of having a pond in the garden, with the grass section also pretty much waterlogged due to clay. We now have 60 tonnes of topsoil from the site of the new Cinema and Supermarket coming, of course it's not grade A and not filtered, but on a budget it's the best we can do. I have a 1.5t mini-digger for a week, and was wondering what advice people can offer? I was wondering if the grass section you can see with the soil dump needs rotavating as I'd need to hire one before spreading some of the acquired soil. Maybe running the digger track over it a few times prior instead of a rotavator, can we get away with trying to get it as level as possible with new, and raking it as much as we can over Summer to try and get rid of the stone. Are the digger tracks going to be good enough for compressing the soil, or infact too much? The part that used to be a jungle and can just be seem as soil in the picture isn't going to be grass but a slightly raised veg plot and the other half a Chicken coop and large-ish run. Part of me wonders if we would be best letting the chickens of the land that will be grass in the future for the Summer and then seed it come Autumn?
  21. Double checked and defiantly nothing when rtfm.
  22. massive thank you guys and a rather embarrassed look from me! Definalty the spacers!
  23. Good afternoon. I was wondering if someone could help ID a bit of plastic that I've only noticed today when the chain came off the bar. The chain no longer goes on smoothly as theres a few links with small notches or slightly bent where they slot into the bar. A new chain will sort that out, but I can't figure out what the plastic in the picture is? I had a thought it could have been to do with the chain tensioner but haven't seen any pictures with the plastic inserted in the bar. Is it safe to pop another chain on and use, or is it a visit to a dealer for a bar fix or new bar?
  24. Having a friend who recently retired, he's going to be using some of his lump sum for investment. Would anyone have any sound knowledge on investing in purchasing a local woodlands? He loves the idea of purchasing a woodlands and it being a source of firewood and walks for years to come, but is there a sum of money that can be made on a say 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 year basis with the likes of coppicing, certain amount of tree felling and such? I would imagine the sum of money he has at being around the £25k - £100k mark, with a couple of the forests locally being prices at around £10k and acre, with most being 4 acres to purchase.
  25. I had a Dr Meter one to begin with, but found the pins bent a little too easy when checking a lot of wood. I purchased [ame=http://www.amazon.co.uk/Brennenstuhl-1298680-MD-Moisture-Detector/dp/B003CSNV2Q/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1392230700&sr=8-2&keywords=moisture+meter]http://www.amazon.co.uk/Brennenstuhl-1298680-MD-Moisture-Detector/dp/B003CSNV2Q/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1392230700&sr=8-2&keywords=moisture+meter[/ame] a couple of days ago as the pins look solid, and I wasn't disappointed. Feels a lot sturdier and overall better made.
