  1. In the top picture it has become apparent that the grain in the foreground this side of the whiter patch has some spalting and is on the cusp of starting to decay and although it still feels hard and heavy, is more absorbent and takes the oil much easier than the other which also is where the trunk divided and has very hard grain, Time will tell!
  2. If the wife is happy , I am not going to stop her! Happy wife happy life!
  3. Dear wife has just put the tenth and last coat of Tung oil on. We have put some different legs on which we are happy with
  4. I decided not to use resin so used wood glue and the fine sawdust from the sanding. Seemed to work. So my wife has put at least half a dozen coats of Tung oil. How should we finish it off or is that ok. Does it need sealing with something or left to breathe?
  5. Can you take me through the whole process. What saw did you cut the slab with, how did you plane it and sand it and what oils did you use and how did you apply the oils/ varnish and how many coats My wife has ordered some squarer legs and I will post a piccy if they look ok And did you fill the cracks or just leave them
  6. Yes those legs look much more sturdy than the X shaped ones
  7. First attempt at dining table. My wife has been busy with the Tung oil. We used the Lucas planer then the Lucas sander both worked well and were easy to set up. Having trouble deciding on the legs. Initially tried three X shaped black metal but they looked too much like a trestle table, sprayed them gold, better but not right.
  8. Thanks for those answers, I think I already knew that it was too far gone, anyway it will still probably outlast me, so next generations problem!
  9. The other morning there was an awful noise as this huge branch split from the main trunk. No wind at all, the cracking a groaning sounded like a firework display Anyway it is one of half a dozen that stand on the garden boundary and they are very fine trees and healthy and we want to do our best to keep them. The question is how best to stop water entering the split and rot the trunk. I have used Arbrex successfully in smaller area but this would need a large amount. Are there any other mixes that I could make that would not cost too much to fill the split? I tried to push the remains of the limb into the main trunk with the telehandler boom to make the hole smaller, but it would not move even an inch and the telehandler has quite a lot of pushing power. Must be reaction wood
  10. Sorry about that, now on YouTube. Are they copulating?
  11. Still wrestling now fifteen minutes later!
