  1. Thanks for your thoughts David and I will follow up on your points. The trunk sounds solid and I must say that I am leaning towards Alec's ideas for retrenchment. My client is a local Councillor so is keen to do things the right way. There are quite a few similar Ash trees on his land that have been heavily pruned in the past and I think he's keen to try a different approach.

  3. That lower limb is coming off, as whilst it is still live it's ripe to split due to the weight. There are several ash trees on this farm all of which have been treated to a pollard, but look awful. I think the dead wood idea is right but do you think it might be as well to advise felling to save future problems due to it's proximity to the road?
  4. Here's my next job, the owner wants to preserve as much as possible. My first thoughts are to pollard but I'd be interested to hear what you all think.
  5. The worry is where is this going? the slime that run our country will have some self serving plan behind this announcement. Like they did with the " lets sell of all our woodland to the rich so that they can evade death duties and at the same time keep the plebs out" Idea! No matter what party you vote for, none of them have the country and it's population's interests a heart, just their vested interests! Mark my words this is just a fore runner to some dodgy scheme. Rant over lol
  6. She certainly rips Wyk. Did you run her on the rich side for the first couple of tanks? are you using the standard carb and jetting?
  7. Update on big bore upgrade. On the fourth tank of gas and upto this point I have been running her a little on the rich side. Tommoz I'm going to tweek the settings and see how she goes. Plenty of grunt already and is handling a 28" bar and chisel chain with out a problem. I've been felling and ringing some big willows and a couple of wind blown leylandi using a 181 stihl for snedding and the 372 for the heavier work.
  8. What a generation they were and still are! The hardships they withstood and survived and their kind are still with us, serving in our armed forces and public services only let down by politics and poor management!

  10. I should also mention that I had an uncle on the other side who I'm also very proud of. He was an engineer in the Wehrmacht and was captured just after the D day landings he eventually ended up in the UK and his research into metallurgy earned this country millions of pounds and provided employment for many. Like my other relations he fought for the country he loved and came to love the country he fought against. When you come down to it's the politicians that start wars but get others to fight it for them.
  11. My Dad was in RASC North Africa then Palestine. My Uncle Rupert was in the Royal Berkshire Regiment and went from North Africa to Sicily and was awarded the MC during the Anzio landings when his battalion were virtually wiped out at Carroceto, they were reduced to just 40 men in total. My Uncle Arthur ran radio intercepts for Bletchley Park from Chicksands, then Wick and later in the Middle East. We didn't discover this until quite recently and when we checked there he was on the Bletchley Park role of honour. My uncle frank Joined late in the war due to his age and served in the Middle East and ended up in Palestine in 48 and was blown up by an Israeli car bomb. Luckily he survived and is still alive and kicking. My Mum worked in London during the blitz and My Gran made tailplanes for Mosquitos at Walter Lawrence's factory in Sawbridgeworth in Hertfordshire.

  13. Ran it today 28" PowerMatch plus bar and full chisel chain on a 37" dia willow trunk really hauls that chain around. Only problem seems to be that the chain seems to go blunt very quickly. Did those nails do any damage Wyk ?
  14. Looks very zippy Wyk. I had to get the thing done today as I need to work it tomorrow. cleaned up the ports opened them on the outside a tad. Once I get five mins. I'll work out the port timing and rebuild it again. I don't think I'll pump up the compression ratio so less stress the bottom end .
  15. The ports on this barrel aren't too bad, they need a little clean up but I'm not going over the top just a bit of blending and opening up. I'll try and do some before and after pics so that you can all do a critique.. lol (must be a glutton for punishment....)
  16. Trouble with high compression engines in this day and age is the poor quality and octane of modern fuels. I used to run my Nortons at 10:1 and some ran theirs as high as 12:1 on 101 octane petrol. Didn't last for great lengths of time though.
  17. Big bore kit arrived today, great excitement until I realized I had forgotten to order base gasket, little end bearing and exhaust gasket.... Quick call to tesgol sorted that and they're in the post. Kit looks pretty good quality but time will tell. Update to follow!
  18. I've ordered a 52mm big bore kit for my 372 from tesgol on ebay and I'll update you all on how it goes.... so fingers crossed :-)
  19. On a slightly different note Spud have you ever fitted one of the big bore kits to a Husky if so how does it effect the carburation?
  20. Good advice chaps, I'll checkout how bad the scoring is and see what I can do. What acid do you use Spud?
  21. By rework do you mean use a cylinder hone or such like?
