  1. Thanks I only have a hand set up and a Dremel. I was hoping I could find a suitable bit for the latter but the grinding wheels are aluminium oxide which I doubt will be up to the job. Is there a sharpening service around who offer this facility?
  2. Is it possible to sharpen a Stihl Tungsten Carbide tipped chain or know of where this can be done please. Many Thanks John
  3. Dewalt or Makita combi would be my choice. If pushed I would choose Dewalt. I have had amazing service from Dewalt combi (and drill driver and impact driver for that matter). Impact drivers are brilliant for driving screws particularly in first fix joinery but not really suitable for drilling or delicate work.
  4. Great respect to you for posting this - a good reminder.
  5. This was the reply I got from Stihl: "Thank you for your enquiry, however we are only permitted to provide parts lists/workshop manuals to our Dealer network. Your local STIHL Dealer should be able advise you on which parts you require, the costings and place any orders on your behalf. To find the Dealer nearest to you please refer to our website: STIHL | Stihl, Viking, chain saws, brushcutters, hedge trimmers, clearing saws, high-pressure cleaners, lawn mowers, trimmers. Our Dealer Locator tool can be found under “Dealer Search” in the top right hand corner of our homepage and will provide you with the contact details for a number of Dealerships"
  6. I recently bought a Stihl saw without knowing their online sales policy. This would certainly have influenced my choice of brand be be it for a saw or anything else made by Stilhl. What surprised me even more was that Stihl refused to supply me with a parts list for my saw or a technical manual - which makes ordering parts even more tricky even from a dealer. In the end I found somebody on ebay who sold me a cd with manuals and parts lists for all Stihl chainsaws. It is sad that you have to go to a third party for such basic information.
  7. The linking to other sites is more a mechanism to get them to link to you ie link swap. Large sites, particularly sites with a high ranking themselves, linking to you does help to move you up the google rankings. A site map definitely helps as well.
  8. Andrew, it is well worth putting a Links page on your website if you can so you can swap links with other website providers/ colleagues. Also try to get as many customers who have websites to link to yours particularly any public bodies you do work for. This will greatly increase your google ranking.
  9. Totally agree, its the best firewood I have come across by a very large margin.
  10. Not used wordpress but have used Adobe Dreamweaver for all of my websites. It is excellent software although with a bit of a steep learning curve. As with all Adobe software it is expensive (even the student edition is in excess of £100) plus a hosting account so is probably not the way to go for a one off. For ready made templated websites take a look at those from 1and1.co.uk - Domain, Hosting and website solutions
  11. Just a follow up - I bought the x27 and followed the advice given - working from edge etc and it has made life much easier. The x27 is a great piece of kit - interestingly I sharpened my heavy maul (I been watching the blunt vs sharp maul argument for a while) and found that it splits much better as well - so definitely a fan of the 'sharp' contingent. Anyway thanks once again for your advice.
  12. Scraggs is spot on re search engine optimisation etc - the diy sites are not all that search engine friendly. You will improve your ranking if you add a links page to other sites and more importantly get other websites to link to you. The use of Key words in headings and page titles will also improve ranking. See also 1and1.co.uk - Domain, Hosting and website solutions - they do some good 'diy' sites for business and personal use.
  13. Many thanks for the info, much appreciated. I will have a go at converting it back to the normal side tension set up. I am still at a loss though as to why the chain seems to tighten as it gets hot - not a great deal but definitely noticeable?
  14. I have a ms231 c-be (tool less chain tensioner) 16" bar 3/8P chain. Its not causing a problem as such but the chain seems to tighten slightly when used from cold which was against my perceived wisdom of a chain slackening as it heats up? Also I'm not a fan of the tool less tensioner - can it be converted to the standard side tensioning?
  15. Thanks guys for the advice - much appreciated. The elm I was given was dead standing. I'll slice into thinner rings and try again!!
  16. I was recently given 2 elm trees - which was great until I came to split the wood . A 9llb splitting maul just bounces off and to splt a ring 12" thick has taken up to 40 blows to a wood grenade with a sledge!
