As per title ,any idea of the range of sizes of logs that will fit in  very small log burners as fitted in Shepherds Huts and canal boats.

How much of a premium do any of you charge for cutting mini logs 6"inches and under as they must be so time consuming to cut!!!!

Sometimes it isn't the length of the log it's the width,  we have a customer with huts and the stoves are feed through a hole in the top,  we don't cut the logs any different 8" but when we are stacking pallets we pick out nets with smaller diameter logs on a separate pallet

  2. Kiln Dried kindling nets available

    Green Monofilament 38x48

Nets per pallet 135 or 144

Locally sourced Virgin larch/ Douglas fir £1.50 + vat per net

    National carriage available,  rates vary

    Pm me postcode

Interesting - but I plan to make a clean break from plastic and have no association with it in the business.

Still very keen to get the Hessian bagged kindling.

As I have already offered to do them for you,  in the size you require

This is the quote for hessian bags

    Well that's a generous offer.

What would the bag ties be made of?

Can they be delivered on a double pallet or pallet and 1/2 which generally reduce haulage cost depending on haulier?

Would the bags be packed to hold the same as my current suppliers bags - 44 x 50 ?

Sounds like you have got the ball rolling !

Bag ties are made of Hessian  , like the bags

A double pallet,  is exactly that double,  so double the floor space in wagon,  double the price

The cheapest hessian sack are the

    33x76

I will have to contact my bag suppliers to find a 44x50 with a tie

Which is a better size for filling and should (with it being smaller) fit more on a pallet course

I think very few would be damaged, a hessian is robust, just look how many seasons the old corn bags used to last. Empty hessian bags £1.

So by your reply "I think"  You haven't actually put the theory in practice

I have,  with plastic nets which in theory will last longer

It's uneconomic, and they look horrendous

    Hessian bags of £1

    A 76x33 hessian bag cost is 50p

    But as explained earlier

You will only get 8 sacks per pallet course,  total pallet of 64

Pallet Carriage average of £40 + vat

    64 sacks x 50p = £32

    One pallet carriage £40

    Total £72 +vat

    Grand total of £86.40

£1.35 Inc vat before you put any kindling in the sack

But if you want any I'll do them

A friend of mine recently said they were changing their brand of tea bags to one that was fully compostable as they were only £1 a box more. Bearing in mind the minuscule amount of non organic fabric / adhesive in a box of tea bags, sort of demonstrates the comparison amount of plastic in a Kindling net.

Things can never change if everyone continues to base their buying decisions solely on price. That mindset has led us to where are today with the climate changes and the harm we have done to planet.

I have got the hessian bag price down to nearly £ 1 / bag delivered inc vat.  Bear in mind that if the bag is returned once for refilling, the price falls to close to 50p and the cycle continues.

Surely this is a better way to move things forward and if supplier's work together, the only bags of Kindling available will come in a returnable, re-usable hessian bag.

Just the thought of making a small difference gives me a good feeling and I am 100% sure that I will be supplying Kindling packed in returnable, re-usable hessian bags in the future. ?

The bag return will only work on a very small scale,

Bags which are returned will have to be sorted,  rip or damaged bags will be unusable,  any which have had bag ties cut, could be rethread but the time it will take will make uneconomic

Are you referring to empty sacks a £1

Or is that sacks full of kindling delivered to you

    This is a genuine question

This is surely the place to ask, as I am looking for Pallet loads of Hessian bagged kindling. Yes the bags cost more, but they are not plastic and more and more people are starting to accept that you have to pay a little more if we are ever going to get away from using plastic.

I have seen a constant stream of adverts on here from people offering their pallet loads of plastic netted kindling.

We have all heard the excuses, some of which are valid, some are not.

Perhaps there is one supplier, somebody somewhere who is prepared to be the pioneer ? and yes I know I'm not going to like the price ?

I've looked at this a few times,

Even as far as importing hessian / jute sacks

It's all down to one thing,  cost

A hessian bag 76x 33 is four times the price of plastic,

Then you have the cost of haulage as a 76x 33 sack will be around 8 sacks per pallet course,  so you would get around 60 sacks of kindling per pallet,

So that's £1.50 per sack delivered inc vat

Without any kindling in the sack,

So the wholesale price would be at the least £3.50

    Are you still interested??

Thanks for the advice. I’ll get it cut, split and under cover as quick as possible. The lorry was absolutely fully loaded when it arrived, I got a shock when I saw quite how much there was. It’s my first time getting a delivery this big but at about £23 a tonne (excluding delivery) I think it’s an experiment that will prove worthwhile.....emoji846.png

Jesus!! That's cheap! Softwoods £50+ a ton in South Wales

Where are you located in the UK and how are the timber prices for you?

Somerset prices for hardwood have reached 80/t delivered. Talking to Haulers it seems like more and more suppliers have had enough. If you are in an affluent area gardening businesses I know of are doing really well, whereas firewood suppliers are barely ticking over. Landscaping is an easy business to expand in areas where people have money as they rarely want to lift a finger. I've seen one man bands expand to 4 teams of 2 with vans.

Local timber merchant is quoting £100 @ ton + VAT, for imported silver birch round wood, delivered has been since Christmas in Cumbria

    Hi Dumper,
    It’s not just about stickers.
There is Biomass standard to adhere to, which covers everything thing from where the timber comes from, to how it’s processed, seasoned, packaged, checked for moisture content etc.
The GiB Certification for HWF is £120 / yr and the annual audit is £60.
There are random audits throughout the year as well to ensure standards are met. You allowed up to 15% timber from tree surgery operations, the rest coming from woodlands with approved management plans and FC felling licences.
The HETAS schemes cost a combined £378 per year. This includes the audits, listing in the HETAS handbook of all accredited suppliers/installers, as well as massive regional and national marketing support.

I’m proud to be accredited by both HETAS & GiB for my woodfuel and with the Clean Air Initiatives announced in January which will bring in further regulation where WoodFuel producers will need to be accredited, it’s a no brainer.

So roughly how much has your sales increased, since joining the scheme

Can't help you with your querie

But try asking in the employment section or firewood, under a different title,  eg any "experience of working in Australia"

    Probably get more response,

    Good luck ? ?

  12. I've one of these on skidsteer loader

Once your use to them you can stack the billets as you split them by screwing in to them and un screwing

I've found best results on soft wood is if it's big stuff, to cut into 1.5 meter lengths then it splits cleaner

Also follow the split when splitting as it makes a cleaner job

  14. Does the manitou, not have two oil fittings on the front?? Thought they all did to be honest

If so when you wedge lever or button find out which one of the two fittings is pumping then put that on the feed side of the splitter and the other pipe will flow back to return using the other fitting on the manitou

We have plenty of oversize wood to process in the near future. Not planning to buy any new kit just want to find the least labour intensive way to ring up and split it all. Current system is to hold the lengths with the forwarding crane over a trailer and ring as much as I can while it's suspended and then drop the remainder and cut that up and repeat until the trailer is loaded up. I bring the tractor splitter up to the trailer and slide the rings from the trailer on the splitter table and then the logs go into the crates.

Any bright idea how to improve this with little or no expenditure?

    2nd hand 360 fuelwood splitta

    Would be perfect

I traded one in to willsons back in July as it didn't fit in with my system

But it was a brilliant machine and the logs are perfect size

Nope . Nowhere  have I said that .  What I am saying is it is un policeable what ever way you want to work it .

    Yes I agree 100%

But we all said the same with Bsl

But that didn't stop them doing it,

This clean air act ,carry on has been in talks with some of major firewood retailers for at least 18month that I know,

There going to do it (government) , This last consultation survey is probably just a "smoke" screen, it's probably all agreed now
