Small world, my parents are just around the corner in Eynsford.

I make the oak 1"1/16 on average, but some of the mill cuts are a bit deep. If you aimed to plane down to 15/16th I'm sure that would level them out, I'd like to keep as much thickness as I can.

I was expecting to sand the boards after so some small marks are fine.

I'll try to post a pic for you as that always helps.

Yes the mantelpiece will be rustic. 38mm is a bit thin 50mm is more what I'm after.

A 3" thick piece planed would be great (if I tell the gf its 2" she'll believe me)

We have a flat tarmac drive you can work on or if its raining I can clear the garage so you can set up in the dry.

Thanks

Also if you were coming down do you have any bits of oak suitable for a mantle piece something like 50mm x 200mm x 1 m (thinks thats 8 by 2ish)

Hi Alec thanks for your offer of help,

my parents live at DA4 0AY near Swanley and the oak is stored there atm. How much would it cost to hire you to come and plane the wood. There are four 2.1m lengths and 6 smaller bits totalling near enough 15m.

 5. Thanks for the responses, my parents live near Swanley so hopefully I will be able to take Alec up on his offer and we can organise something. And I'll put up some pics sometime, whenever it all gets done. Thanks
 6. Hi I need to get about 15m of American white oak planed. Its for widow sills and about 1" thick, 11" wide and I need one side planed on each plank before they are ripped down and fitted. Is there anyone in the Sussex or Kent area (the nearer Brighton the better) who has a planer wide enough that I can stop by with the wood and get you to clean it up for me. Thanks Graham
