  1. Evening, looking at getting some work on MoD land/estates, I have been informed that this incurrs 10 million pounds worth of cover, is this true and if so does anybody know of a firm that will cover this and what are the premiums like? Cheers, Jan.
  2. Cheers for the information, about to start my first re-pollard on an Ash ... about 15 years growth ... any hints beings its an Ash??!!
  3. I got a repollard on an Ash coming up down here in sunny Cornwall, glad to see all the info on here and pointers to pollarding info ... cheers, Jan.
  4. I use one powered from an old grey fergie, ideal for processing and then running through a splitter, not much in the way of health and safety guards though ...
  5. Thats far too much, 3 or maybe 4 times what should be paid ...
  6. You can feel its low geared, grunty n all, mpg I can live with knowing its one hell of a tool, had a ton in the back this evening, didn't skip a beat!
  7. Yep, £215 is about right, got to do mine in June ... lovin it by the way!
  8. Thats what I got, hope it turns out to be like yours ... seems ideal at the moment, had a half ton load in it yesterday, didn't bat an eyelid,
  9. Got mine now, handshake already done, although I must agree that a landrover cannot be beaten for off road towing ... thats about all they are good for though!! No offence intended to hardcore landy fans :laugh1:
  10. Seems to be a good tool, I've been using a 1.7td Astra van for years, 140 thou, I have ragged it, towing etc etc ... a great wagon but time to change, big ends, clutch, gearbox etc etc ... literally run into the ground!
  11. haha it was the Mazda I wanted in the first place, couldn't find one for love nor money ...
  12. Just got the 06 plate, 40 000 miles and never worked, probably a chelsea tractor from new ... I've yet to put it to work but was impressed with the low ratio, very grunty ... I had heard probs about 5th or 6th gears on these, if they had 6 gears, touch wood I shall get a few years work out of it ... need some mud tyres now! Thanks for the replies, Janlogger
  13. Just about to pick up a Ford Ranger, heard mostly good things as with the Mazda B series ... anyone got one? What do you reckon?
  14. I have had it myself in business, had it only a few days ago ... yeh yeh, you do your thing and I'll do mine now go away and learn the alphabet is my normal response ...
  15. I agree, I think the problem arises when m3 are converted into tons after splitting loading etc ... I read on here that the 'cube' measurement should be used all the way along the chain to the customer who orders 'split, dry, mixed load of firewood'. I find that some people assume that a 'cube' of split firewood is a ton of firewood, which is not the case as we know. We have literally taken the time to split a cube of softwood, hardwood, and a mixed load ... loaded it into trailer/truck or both and weigh it at the local weighbridge. We deal in m3's to the customer but have a ready answer for the kg's they are actually getting in real terms if they ask, explaining thats dry weight, not wet! A chap I spoke to recently reckoned he had 2.5 m3's delivered for £70 from a firm that was a good 15-20 miles away, a 40 mile round trip which I just can't compete with which got me thinking and asking in the first place! I checked his delivered load out and needless to say it was a joke, but he was chuffed having recieved 2.5 'tons' as he assumed of logs and offcuts. We found after splitting, roughly 30% is left out of a trailer loaded up flat. the answer for price at roadside in m3, not cord, is £35-£40 depending on your negotiating skills and how well you know the chap you are dealing with, and your attitude of course ...
  16. Ideal, thanks for that, thats a benchmark to go on.
  17. Ok thanks for that, at least I can 'negotiate' with a bit more confidence now or certainly be able to compare ... would £50 be a fairer sum or much lower? Thats with delivery and vat mind.
  18. Apologies, Softwood supplied in trunks, a lorry load of ... £60 per m3 delivered ... like I say not done this before so if I confuse.com anyone, apologies once again. I've spy an opening in my little corner of Cornwall/Devon and am in the middle of researching prices, reliability etc etc as I don't think the local contacts, farmers, tree work etc would be reliable enough as a going concern... Cheers, Jan £60 m3 spot on or too much?
  19. Then there is the question ... is loose firewood supplied by weight or m3's?? Because the two are very different animals ... cheers, Jan
  20. Thanks for that, so for example a 1m3 trailer would carry a solid 1m3 lump of wood, but if you were to split that, given air gaps even if it was stacked tightly you would not get the entire original cube of wood in ... if a cube of softwood stacked and dry weighs 300kg, then you could get 3 and a bit trailer loads? Sounds a bit too much, I would have thought double at best? But then again thats whay I'm asking! Cheers, Jan.
  21. Hi all, mainly deal in Christmas Tree's, but can be very seasonal as you can imagine! Diversified into coal, netted logs etc but seems there is a call for loose loads of firewood in my area of the South West which I am hoping to act on ... being green to firewood processing, after a few phone calls emails etc I have managed to get the first quote being softwood, delivered at £60 a cube ... this sound reasonable? And is there a way of working out how much split wood we could get from a cube, and then applying this to a whole lorry load? We obviously need to make a profit after forking out for a shed load of timber and then there is the labour involved (which I will do!) Cheers ...Jan
