  1. The picture is a bit unclear, but the serial number looks like 1401928 which means the saw was made 1991 week 40.

Everything I see fits with an early 51, which fits with that timing. Normally the model number also is on the tag, but I can't make it out from that picture. The 51 and 55 replaced the 50 early 1990.

Anyway you should measure the bore, as the top end may have been changed at some point.

I'll get some clearer pictures tomorrow :thumbup1:

  2. My first stihl chainsaw (after about 6 piles of absolute crap) was a an ms210 with a 14in bar for £60 and it's a little beauty to this day!! Always handy to have around on any tree job and just as handy for doing hedges if bits are to big for the trimmers! Great round a chipper, handy on a fencing job, and it's also done it's fair share of felling small firewood trees! End of the day some jobs don't require a big saw and when you can pick these saws up for £80 like this then why not??? It's your first saw and there's no point going any bigger to you feel comfortable with that!! The biggest saw I've ever used was an ms440 in Sweden and man that thing was a beast!!! As someone who's used small chainsaws since I was 15 it was an experience just holding that animal and reving it made me instantly realise the ms210 was a mere child's toy in the cold light of reality BUT a toy that could cause major damage if used incorrectly!!! Start small, see if chainsaw work suits you and then look for something that suits you better and keep the smaller saw for smaller jobs! End of the day it works, it's got stihl on it and it's £80......no brainer

  3. fair enough mate thanks for the id!!! The guy didn't even know how to start it and got given by his uncle few years back so don't feel done over!! Still be plenty good enough for me though and can never have enough saws at times so it will earn it's keep I'm sure :thumbup1:

  4. It was a great saw, I had a few of them, must be knocking on a bit now.

that's good to hear!! yeah I think it's about 1997 from what the guy told me?? Also all the ones Google have black chain brakes but mines has an orange one ! guessing it's an early model???

  5. Been looking at a replacement for my Jonsered 630 super until I get it sent of to spud (it's coming mate bare with me lol) and stumbled across this for £120!!!

seems a cracking saw and can't wait to get it tested on a job soon!! anyone else have one and if so are they a good model???

  6. Well its the time of year when all our close family and friend start to have ideas on DIY gardening and tree work so as i'm sure you will all be aware you will be the first person they ask for a chainsaw, Strimmer, hedge trimmer etc etc  I honestly hate lending my stuff out to people who may mean well but in reality have no idea that reving the life out of a tool on full throttle for tank after tank of MY two stroke isn't what there for :sneaky2: but the fact is your the only one "who does that kind of work" so your first on the list :001_rolleyes: i did a garage clearance few weeks back and in there was an electric chainsaw, electric hedge trimmers, electric flymo and a tiny little electric strimmer so I've stored them all in my garage and anyone wanting to borrow these tools is more than welcome as on the day they want the "proper" tools ill unfortunately be doing a tree, hedge, mowing job or whatever job the tool does that they want to borrow  I was in Leicester few weeks back and forgot to take my stihl saw :blushing: so went to a hire shop and they wanted a £100 deposit, two forms of id and £65 a day hire charge :scared1: needless to say I just drove home and picked mine up lol but these places must make a fortune out of lending stuff out they can survive without whereas if we lend something out and it breaks it's could lose us work and a hefty bill to get it fixed!!! My new saying is "these tools are my livelyhood and your garden is your hobby, get your own stuff or help yourself to the electric tools in the corner of the garage"

How do you lot deal with folk like these as i'm sure we all have it :laugh1::thumbup1:

  7. ive got an old stihl 041 here that is only used as a back up saw so very rarely comes out to play........was on about saws today to a bloke on site and it came up......turns out he likes that model and offered me £100 cash!! not mega money I know but its an old saw, heavy and no chain brake fitted so im thinking take it and put cash in x-mas fund in one hand and keep it as you never know in the other lol

so if you had the cash on offer what would you do???

    :thumbup1:

  8. Doing a much more important and in-depth programme on theft of tools used in the industry and highlighting it's a national problem that costs thousands if not millions (there's the first fact for you to find out :001_smile: ) will help get your foot in the door..... :001_smile:
