Thanks. the dark couluration is done with a blow torch, and the mid tone with oak decking stain. Eyes painted in with acrylics.

It could be for sale, or a copy as my missus is dead keen on this for our garden. at this scale it would cost around £350. could be less if i scaled down.

Here is an exercise i am doing at the moment, whilst I am waiting for the first big jobs of 2013 to begin. A nice chunk of beech i had left over from a job last year was used. a bit more finishing and preserve/colouring to put on and she will be finished. tools used have been :- Husky 357XP, Styl MS192 (carving) , carving chisels and a run over with a flap sander. Around 6 hours work to get to this stage.

me too. just lots of practice is the key. try to get some good 3 dimentional models of what you want to carve. some kids toys are good enough. i have been doing some meerkats lately and luckily found a garden orniment at a B and Q which has helped with proportions. good luck

thanks all except the eyes were done with a chainsaw. for them I used carving chisels. outlined with a small V and created the semi-spherical eye ball with a 10mm flat. Painted with acrylic paints. (last surprisingly well in the weather).

Hi all completed this Dragon for some friends this weekend. Had some postponments due to the snow , so pulled this one in in my studio.

thanks guys The frog was fun to carve. Did it in front of a crowd of local residents and voulenteers that had seen there local green space transformed from a drug taking zone to a lovely place to visit in their city, (Nottingham)

Hi all did this Basalisk (big snake thing from Harry Potter) a few weeks ago . very cold weekend! nearly got frozen to it flanking it are the two happy owners.

one you get more experience , you can get the owl 'blocked out' ( major cuts) in 5 or 6 mins, leaving the rest for 'rounding off' the edges and detailing work. amazing what you can achieve with a dime tip saw. good luck Simon.

Once you have got the hang of the 'green man' face. have a go at a female face. quite a few subtlties.... smaller nose and jaw line etc.

Yes, I have shifted a few Meerkats recently. Cute little fellas Here is a couple of pictures of one i did last october as part of a demo at Newark country show (100% chainsaw). He hangs around near my back door

Hi i recon you could cut out the centre section that is rotten(on the bit you sit on), and depending on how sound the sections left either side, could carve two mushrooms or little owls. recon that will make a nice feature to your seat. If all goes horribly wrong, you can always cut to ground level as sugested earlier in the threads. what can you loose? good luck.

great job. re. the arms... get someone to stand in front of you with their arms in a similar position and note were the upper arm meets the forearm and anglular relationship of the two. Take phots for reference. bear and human arm anatomy is similar. even better if you have a mate who spends alot of time at the gym Hope this helps a bit. good luck

Hi All Here are a couple of pictures of a job i did for Derby Council last weekend. Luckily I managed to find a window in the recent wet weather I plan to carve a owl chick half way down the stump on the 16th June, as part of an event to open a new woodland walk within Alestree Park. (DE22 2EU)
