Getting those tickets would be great but if you are struggling to get a start somewhere a good tactic wood be to get your chemical spraying / hand held Knapsack ticket. The big utilities companies are always looking for sprayers come the spring and this could be the opening you need to get into the arb work.

I've stored 2 or 3 pallets of good quality split hardwoods under natural cover for two harsh winters in aberdeen and I must agree with skyhuck in that it hasn't done well irrespective of what some books may say. I can't honestly say if it will burn better or not , i do not have a log burner but think it must only be worth half the value of nice clean looking logs.

' Beating up ' is just a planting term meaning going over the whole site and replacing dead trees that are normally in their infancy and you are correct in saying it is done by commercial enterprises. you can buy ATV's now fitted with hydraulic or battery sprayers which would sound ideal for a smallholder like yourself. By the wording of your post it sounded if you were wanting to make life as easy for yourself as possible. Not a bad idea in my opinion !

Can the whole site possibly be ring fenced and the tree guards removed enabling mechanical spraying ? You may have to accept a few losses initially but beating up will be necessary anyway .

If you can at least borrow a groundsmans helmet for the course I would be inclined to go for that , a climbers helmet at this stage I feel would be setting you up for some sort of ridicule , something that you could do without . Get a proper helmet now and do things right from the beginning would be my advice.

I'm just home , Knackered , my arms scratched to buggery, been balancing on dodgy platform, have underpriced leylandii job again, had that ' youve only done that much look' from the owner ...vowed never to do this again, But will as sure as night will follow day!

Watched the program tonight. My wife and I felt there was a real lack of youth representation and input. Very sad story though.

Sorry for the late post , I have just registered today. If you have already bought a shire then thats all good but if not I couldn't recommend a Dales pony highly enough. I have owned and worked one for 8 years now and there is nothing that will faze him. They will cost a fraction of the price to keep than your shire and are alot more versatile hence their name ' The Great Allrounder ' . Charlie Parker from Yorkshire or the Dales Pony Society would be a good first port of call. Again if breed is not important Jim Johnstone from Auldgirth, Dumfries would be a good bet for an Ardennes or something of that ilk , I'm sure Jim would be up for a haggle! Anyway hope that may be of some help and I hope you find something suitable soon
