Define monster!
Biggest I've seen here is probably just shy of 2ft dbh and around 85-90ft tall. Clear stem to about 45ft and single stem reaching right up to the top of the canopy. A real corker!
Yeh i reckon that would be about average over there , couldnt believe the size of them !!

I'm going to throw my hat in for some guelder rose , stunning late winter berries hanging like jewels gorgeous to look at and important for the birds
Ps if you like birch get yourself over to Sweden , absolute monsters ..

Certainly end of some villages !! this flooding is getting serious !!

I have had the haix Tibet forest boots for just over a year and they are great never had wet feet even when clearing scrub across a stream so standing in ankle deep water most of the day, they are comfortable out of the box, the higher top gives much better ankle support and shin protection than standard length boots and they seem to have the best tread depth of any boot I've seen so you don't slip about so much when it's muddy
Do you know how much they are brand new ??
I've got brand new size9's still in box if anyone interested (sorry mods)

please explain how is that part of the tree under any greater stress than lower down or further up i don't understand? and i didn't recut my hinge i recut my sink so it went in the right direction lol
Dont know the maths involved but generally between 1-2 metres above the ground is the greatest bending moment / tension of a tree and is the most likely to split out therefor . (does look as if you have had two stabs at the hinge as mentioned , not a criticism at all just an observation )

Just seen it in the news , you will be okay if you head to a mountain in the Pyrenees . See you all there ?
-
Lower D?
The one below your upper/side D
-
Sounds like you have had a bit too much LARGER jonesie !!
-
I still climb how I was taught with a Prussic so the friction is crazy and water just seeps out when you eventually get it to move.. Maybe try out this new zig zag melarky in the new year!
Just stick a little fig8 in your lower D , smooths out any jumpiness in your hitch under the circumstances you say . Thats what i got recommended from on here and it works a treat

Have to be careful cutting at that height also its the trees ' hotspot' ie its highest stress point .
-
In my opinion that wood hasnt rotted enough for failing under ' normal' circumstances . The storms in the east coast round about that time were extremely damaging , i did an oak very similar to the pictures which ripped apart much worse than the one shown because of included unions , not decay specifically .

Any particular reason behind your suggestion ?

ALLEZ BRAD !!!!!

Cool photo's dude !! ( I'm gettin the aussie climbers speak ! )

Hey what about an invite for northern arbtalkers !!
Yes Braemar i think must be one of the most stunning places in the uk . Mar Lodge is just a hidden gem , i'll never forget stumbling upon it when i came up here . Those mountains are so so tempting at the moment

Terrific shots !!! That is really awesome

Have a real cracking Christmas mate , great news

Iirc warm (maybe just hot?) water freezes faster than cold due to fluid convection. Im not sure what the threshold is. A friend was adamant that a kettle or two in her horses water bath would keep it from freezing.
The small poly tunnel and straw/similar insulation sound like good ideas to me.
James
Thats correct about the warm water . Thats what they put down to resurface skating rinks between sessions , it freezes much faster you can skate on it after 10 mins or so , not possible with cold water . The horses water troughs just get the ice broken on them and refilled with buckets from the house if outside taps freeze . Can be a pita but not alot you can do about it .

I'm not overlooking anything! iv'e been on my arse just like silky was a few months ago. I moved to a different country to get back on my feet (subbed £300 off my brother to get there). When that work dried up i came back to the UK and moved south to find more work!
Please do tell me what i'm overlooking?
I just said there was threads on here where professional boys were struggling for work ?? Thats a fact ..
Dont need to explain to me buddy what being truely on their arse is ..Been there aswell , glad to here you bounced back like me ..

Good luck to ya! I'm sick of hearing that "our jobs" are being taken by people who are coming in from Europe. there is plenty of work out there if we want it! you only have to check out silkyfox's thread.
Yes , agreed inspirational thread from silky but you seem to have overlooked other recent threads ? Thing is the auction for example wont be discussed gentlemanly over a pint sort of thing , it'll brew and simmer away until something ugly will happen . Only an observation , not condoning anything at all .

If the kit is going abroad at least foreigners aren't using it over here to under cut every one. So they are bringing money into the country and paying over the odds (more than any one else at the auction) and still they get twined about. If you could import a great chipper from Europe and save a fortune would you worry about the other people?
Yes i would be extremely worried at a German chipper auction full of Scots and no Germans for example
anyone near Feltham/Heathrow area of London ?
