  1. Hi all, Got 15 - 20k to spend on a mini forwarder, but am having real trouble finding any second hand ones. Does anyone here have one for sale, per chance? Preferably a KRANMAN, Vimek, WheelHorse or IronHorse, but am open to suggestions. Must have a crane and over 1 ton loading capacity. Thanks
  2. Out of interest, what was the real bad experience? Considered a pickup, but want plenty of storage space in the rear and windowless panels for advertising.

    One thing I don't like about most mogs is that they're left hand drive. You can get RHD conversion kits (£2,500 ish), but due to their width I'd be scared as hell driving one down the road with only the hedge for company.

    After researching mogs myself, I'm left feeling disappointed due to the cost of buying a decent/reliable 2nd hand one, which is roughly 12,000+, if you buy from a dealer like Atchinson Vos that is (watch the VAT by the way). They're expensive machines, but also very useful according to everyone I've met who's ever owned one. Some say they cover their cost over 3 years by doing the work of several men. So nice to have, if you have the money, but why can't they just be 8,000k instead!

  6. Problem is I need a 2 seater with long hard top and sides for commercial vehicle status and advertising company. Looks like the Landy is back in the running.
  7. Been looking into getting a Land Rover 110, LWB, 2 seater, but I suspect the the prices are high compared to other 4x4's on the market. Can anyone suggest some alternatives please: 2 seater, no rear seats (or passenger windows, of course) LWB Hard top (needed especially to place business logo and contact details on) 4x4 capabilities, low, high and diff Good towing potential Few electrics Easy to maintain £3-5k If any model has a POL too, that would be a bonus Many thanks.
  8. That's not actually a factor. You cannot be in a worse financial position that you were in before, so they must payout what you can reasonably expect to pay. What you paid for it in the first place is irrelevant.
  9. My parked car (a sweetheart by the way) was recently written off by a 7.5 ton lorry who's owner was insured with the NFU. The driver admitted full liability and the NFU assessor valued my vehicle as an insurance write-off, initially offering £600. I believed the vehicle to be worth £1000, so started digging (Association of British Insurers, indemnity laws, the Financial Ombudsman, etc.) They HAVE to put you back in the same financial position that you were in before - the amount must match what you could reasonably expect to pay for a replacement vehicle, like-for-like. Now I couldn't find a vehicle of approximately the same mileage, age and condition. So, I emailed the NFU with details of classified ad's that matched my car's spec. The NFU (by now realising that I meant business) then raised the offer to £850 - still not good enough because there were simply no cars available for that price, and as the NFU admitted the GLASS and Parkers guides were merely guides that might not necessarily reflect the true market value. The NFU also tried to say that one can expect around £100 to be knocked off when buying from a dealer (they're tricky ones, oh yes), but I pointed out that this was an unknown variable that couldn't be used to decide the payout amount. Incidentally, I had a spare car so could keep negotiating with them until the cows came home (never refuse the offer, just say you'll conduct further research before deciding, dangling the carrot, so to speak.) They provided a courtesy car (they have 3rd party insurance through the AA) so the longer the delay, the more it costs them, not that I was delaying intentionally. Eventually, after 2 weeks of negotiation, they offered me £1000 (but they kept the write off, which was fair enough.) The lesson: if you can't find a replacement for the price they're offering, don't accept it and keep pushing.
  10. Thanks Baron. I need to investigate further, which may mean visiting a dealer for a demo first, but if the Peterson does practically the same job than the Mizer then it's the current contender. Do you happen to know if Peterson is a British company? Are there any British mobile sawmill companies out there? If anything, I now understand the difference between a swing saw and a band saw, which is a start. Most opinions favour the swing mill due to the lesser cutting time.

  12. Just so I understand this: once you make the first horizontal cut, you turn the log and it rests against a vertical plate, which then allows you to make the second horizontal cut, forming a perfect 90 degrees?
  13. So can you move the blade from the horizontal to do the vertical cut using one of those mills?
  14. Yes, have looked at the wood mizers, but which one fits the bill for cutting square timber?
  15. Thinking of buying a mobile mill but the choice is baffling. I'd like one that's able to saw both sides of the timber, creating a 90 degree angle rather than being limited to waney edge. Are these called 'resaws' or have I got that wrong? Alternatively, is there a reliable technique for cutting both edges uniformly using a standard mobile sawmill? Being able to cut featherboard too would be nice, but that's probably unlikely for a 15k budget. Thanks

  17. Drivers licence. Check. Don't read tabloids or watch television so it'll have to be the 'Good Wood Gazette' Check. Thank you for the information. I'm so glad that some mickey mouse organisation hasn't yet been empowered to legistlate and licence a simple business model. God I hate rules.
  18. About to start delivering chopped firewood (hardwood) to domestic households Will be transporting in transit tipper Wood sourced from own woodland and arb jobs Now the big question: do I need any sort of licence or tickets to sell / transport / deliver firewood?
