  1. Nice finds. Are they second hand or new? I think they're new due to being sold through a dealer.
  2. Correct. Just spoke to them on the phone. It's only yard based equipment.
  3. Yeah, the prices I listed above were sent to me via Nathan @ Home Forestry. Nathan, perhaps I should have asked you first before posting the prices you quoted to me via email, so apologies if this is a concern. Please PM me if this is a problem. Regarding grants, had a chat with the WEBS 2 grant scheme today, which sounds promising. Here's the link in case anyone is interested: Forestry Commission - WEBS 2 Grant Information
  4. Any links to the grants please?
  5. This is what I was recently sent by the UK's main supplier (not sure if there are other suppliers actually): Most people go for the 820 diesel: 418000 SEK 1 telescopic bunk: 2850 SEK Two lever control for spool: 10500 SEK Delivery: 8000 SEK Total: 439350 SEK Divided by today's exchange rate, an approx price of £41,253.52 + VAT. So a total of: £49,482.
  6. Sure am. South Wales, to be vaguely precise Why do you ask?
  7. The Alpine tractor and trailer was one of the first combo alternatives I came accross and considered (still in the running.) The only advantage to the Alstor that I can see is that it is 8X8, but would the extra 25k-ish justify the trailer traction...probably not. The Alstor seems suited for the larger, more expensive operations, whereas the Alpine tractor would be cheaper to run, maintain, and purchase.
  8. Use mine to heat water. Free outside showers.
  9. Thanks for the advice, Brett. Noted.
  10. Absolutely - common sense is certainly a prerequisite for long term safety. Had high paying office jobs as a specialist contractor, but 15 years sitting in a seat, pressing buttons and staring at a screen formulating computational logic drove me absolutely crazy. Changed direction and became a groundworker. Nothing like the open air.
  11. You won't believe the prices of the Alstor 8x8! We're talking £45k minimum, then there's the extras. Hoping that the Kranman Bison comes in cheaper. Will keep you all posted. Actually, will add a list of all the researched models and average prices in a few days.
  12. Does it count if I abuse myself?
  13. It's not that I'm incapable of being careful, far from it. But through experience I know that, for whatever reason, concentration can sometimes fail, and that's when it would be prudent to have taken precautions to minimise the risk in case anything did happen. Can't see what's wrong with taking precautions, especially when you hear stories of super experienced fellers having an easily avoidable accident.
  14. Wise words from everyone and thanks for the advice. I like to take precautions due to ever so slight hyperactivity that results in lack of concentration or rare occasions (subdued by nicotine usually.) That's my diagnosis anyway. FYI: just bought this hydration pack with built in back protector: Evoc Freeride Enduro Hydration Pack - 2012 - Only £98.99 - Rutland Cycling Who knows what good it'll do, but at least I won't go thirsty and still be able to look upwards.
  15. Exactly my thoughts before hearing a few horror stories, one of which involved a tree surgery veteran that suffered a single lapse of concentration and didn't notice a loose limb before conducting a simple backcut. Knowing what I'm like, I will eventually make a mistake later in the day, despite how safely I approach the start of the day. With that in mind, I'd rather the discomfort of a spine protector. Looking for something with a little bit of flexibility, rather than overly ridged.
  16. It's limbs I'm concerned with, not entire trees. A friend is permenantly out of action (spleen, kidney, broken back, but not paralysed) becasue of a large limb. That's what I wish to protect as best I can against. Trees I can avoid
  17. Heard some disturbing stories of accidents recently that occurred during simple chainsaw fells within woodlands, so am definitely gonna splash out on a decent back and neck spine protector that can be worn beneath my forestry jacket, just in case a widow maker doesn't finish me off and leaves me in a wheelchair. Morbid I know, but I'm all for safety or death, just not the in-between. Can anyone recommend a good quality spine protector that serves the lower back all the way to the top of the neck? The only ones I can find are sold through mountain bike outlets, but I was hoping there was one designed for beneath-tree work.
  18. Nice find. Haven't come across that one before. I'd like to travel to Europe to buy one personally, but am worried that the language barrier might prove difficult without an interpreter.
  19. They do. I spoke to Jim a few days ago and am waiting for him to get back to me. Not sure if the Kranman can be towed though? I have a Landy.
  20. Yeah, the PM thing has me confused sometimes too Will try again
  21. Very nice. What did the entire setup set you back, if you don't mind me asking? I'm probably going to specialise in extraction using a smaller setup. Something that allows me to climb hills and manoeuvre into tight, hard to reach spaces on an incline without tearing up the land too much. This is the current forerunner, although not available via a UK supplier yet. Look, Ma, no hands: [ame] [/ame] Incidentally, did you get my PM, Billy?
  22. Excellent! PM'd.
  23. Carmarthen, South Wales (lower mid). Would you happen to have a link to the relative grants authority please? I have found this, which looks promising: http://www.ruraldevelopment.org.uk/news/new-grant-scheme-announced-forestry-equipment
  24. Never heard of 'match funding' before. Is that a grant for startup businesses or something?
  25. Got 20k to spend. Yes, it has to be a mini forwarder. Thinning on sensitive grounds on steep slopes. Iron Horse and Wheel Horse have too little power and you don't get much for your money. I'll be going on a Swedish road trip if UK suppliers continue to remain in hiding. Really hoping that someone is selling one second hand. The VAT on new machinery is a biatch!
