    Thanks Mark, No mention of the environment as usual (bar a passing reference from Corbyn). I guess it's not something the British public care enough about to make an issue out of. It seems that we only take an interest in the health of our home after we have huffed and puffed our way to protecting our nest eggs and ensuring that we don't let poor people in to have a chance at the same opportunities. And before you ask, yes I am a bloody hippie:biggrin:

    I use a Portek chainsaw bench for my small diameter stuff. Less than £100, readily available and very effective. I actually prefer it to my circular saw bench for that size of wood.

    If it's not called a 'saw horse' they've missed a trick there. You certainly wouldn't want to mistake it for a horse! Apologies for being no help whatsoever.

    Just to throw in my tuppence worth. I use electric splitters. It is really nice having the engine (diesel generator) a long way away from the work station. Also keeps the tractor free. My splitters are only 8ton (limited by the electric motor) but they have no problem splitting 99.9% of logs.

    Agreed! I always seem to revert back to the low-tech option, although in my case it is horizontal splitters and a huge library of audiobooks:001_smile:

    Fair point. My issue is that I have struggled to get the finished log quality I need from processors. The best I have seen is the top of the range Jappa with it's funky splitting action. This machine costs about 100 million pounds.

    Probably not enough oomph. Power pack would be a good option, freeing up the tractor to carry the logs to the machine. Adds significantly to the cost though.

    Thanks Matty, Really valuable getting the thoughts of people who have used these machines commercially. I have been to two demo's of the splitta but am very aware of the difference between a demo and the real world of sweat and swearing!

    Yes, I only have a small (50hp) alpine and no access to 3 phase.

    It is a very long and tedious story! I have tried every conceivable system for moving and processing logs over the last 4 years. The decision to extract in rings boils down to a combination of several factors including the availability of volunteers, a very narrow bridge, understandably fussy customers and most importantly a commitment to enjoy the process!

    Interesting! How did it cope with smallish diameter rings that ideally would just be split down the middle?

    They certainly won't be compatible with everyone's system. I do a lot of firewood and ring up as part of the process. This machine would streamline the splitting phase. Any oversize rings easily yield to the swing of an axe, I have 80% Ash. I do woodland management rather than tree surgery mind.

    I really like this machine. I have made the decision to buy it on at least 5 occasions but chicken out every time.

    This is simply not true Mull. The 9/11 attackers were mostly middle class Saudi's- pilots, architects, engineers. The terrorists blowing us up do not want what we have. They despise the way that we live. They are religiously motivated. We don't need to guess, they are telling us exactly why they doing this.

    I can't find anything that reliably backs up this claim. There does however appear to be a huge discrepancy amongst Islamic scholars around what is allowable in terms of martyrdom killings. These range from anything goes, through no women, children and non combatents to be killed, to all killing is forbidden. This does give us some hope for the future if we can big up the nice guys. I would still argue that the only 'foolproof' way forward is to educate Gods out of the human psyche all together, negating the need to gamble on a peaceful interpretation.

    Evening Richie. From what I can ascertain, suicide is indeed against the teachings of Islam, martyrdom is not. They don't see blowing themselves up as suicide (suicide bomber is a term invented by the west). They see it as dying in a glorious religious battle defending the faith. Quran (4:74) - "Let those fight in the way of Allah who sell the life of this world for the other. Whoso fighteth in the way of Allah, be he slain or be he victorious, on him We shall bestow a vast reward." Whether or not Jihad needs to be commanded by a high authority seems to be a pretty moot point.

    There is absolutely no doubt that the terrorists want to 'Islamify' Britain and the world. They are constantly telling us this, it's no secret. We have two options. Either we kill everyone who is trying to do this, and everyone who might try to do this in the future, or the human race gets them to change their minds. The first option is impossible. The second option is almost impossible and it necessitates that they reject the central core of their religion. There is hope as many Muslims, once they have better things to think about, lose interest in the concepts of Jihad and Martyrdom. We need to help them develop their thinking. Anyone who thinks it is wrong of me to label Jihad and Martyrdom as outrageously bad ideas is surely dangerously deluded.
