  1. Hi I dont know if you are still looking/ I am selling my mill and 4WD to haul it, [email protected] if you want to know more. Regards Andy
  2. Hi, I am not sure that a lot of folk appreciate the opportunity that you have to make something useful from this Ash tree. I would try looking for someone with a portable mill who can do this for you, they do exist in France, it would be sin to reduce it to firewood, unfortunately two cold winters in row have pushed the re-sale cost of logs up so much that folk in general are doing very little else with their timber. What ever you do I wish you the best of luck, if it were financially viable I would come over and cut it myself ! best regards The Woodman
  3. Hello, If you want to ask some advice why not email Derek Hanson at the college. He has worked on the arb team there for many years, he is very friendly and helpful, if you wish you can tell him Andy (Te Woodman) put you in touch. Best of luck with course Merristwood is a great facility, do you know it was the first college of it type in the world ? [email protected] Andy
  4. Hi all, We were invited to the Show this year by the organisers. It was a mega busy day spoilt by rain at the end. However, the crowds were happy to see the Peterson at work judging by the response we got. We chomped through 5 Turkey Oak trunks, mostly 6x2 and 6x6 cuts. Unfortunately after using the metal detector throughout the day we were caught out on the last one and lost 5 of the 8 teeth on the blade, thanks to a 30 year old gate hinge. One spectator told of a time many years back when felling an old oak they hit metal. After some hacking around they discovered an old shot gun in the tree !
  5. Hello, You might try Graham at Loglogic in Devon he is the Peterson UK rep. There are also S/H mills for sale on the Petersons Sawmills website. regards Andy
  6. A big thanks to all the folk who took the time to come and gas with us today and admire the working capability of the Peterson. thanks for your support:thumbup: The Woodman:001_smile:
  7. my apologises I put in my last thread 19/5/11 for the show It is actually next Sunday the 15th !! I will be more than happy to chat or give any advice/opinion to anyone with Milling enquiries. See you there The Woodman..
  8. Hi, As you would expect I will say Swingsaw!. You can get to difficult locations, they are cheaper to buy and a lot less to maintain (only 5 or 6 teeth on a swingsaw blade). Wide boards (like a bandsaw will cut) are of very limited use as they dry faults will start to appear. But by far the greatest advantage over the bandsaw is speed. regards The Woodman.
  9. Hi, I second the Garrett super scanner wand, (check ebay for cheepies, shop soiled stock and ex demos etc), they are robust and very compact and a breeze to use. These will penetrate to a good depth so they pick up ingrown debris. A friend got an ex demo for £30. The Woodmam
  10. Greetings one and all, We will be doing demonstrations at the Merrist Wood Show (19/5/11) and The Surrey County show (30/5/11) if anyone out there wants to come and meet up. It will be a good opportunity to see the mighty Peterson WPF in action ! kind regards Andy (The Woodman)
  11. Hello, Some useful info information that may help. Strip stack the timber to air dry before putting into a kiln. Then you can select only the best cuts for the kiln as any natural faults will appear while it is airing. This saves time and money drying the rubbish. Strictly speaking 2' cuts want to season for about a year. If you are slab sawing then the radial cuts from the mid section will be more reliable than the cuts from the upper and lower portions of the trunk. When timber is being planed and straightened a machinist will take approx 1/4' from each face. Hope this is useful. Andy (The Woodman)
  12. Hello, I would suggest putting together an introductory letter an mail shot your area. Landowners - Councils - Highway authorities - Golf courses - Hotels - railways etc. Maybe put an s.a.e. inside each letter and include an enquiries returns slip. Above all else dont give up hope. Best of luck. Andy (The Woodman).
  13. I reckon it is good sense mate. European Hardwoods will be the new gold in a few years time.
  14. Greetings one and all. I have had a few folk getting in touch to enquire about the cost of milling etc. So here is a bit of info. When I buy timber in, it is converted at site, the m3 is what is produced, rather than what there is at the start. Roughly speaking the m3 from a trunk is 30% less once cut (this varies with the quality if the wood) heart shake and decay can have big influence on the final amount cut. I do have day rates for those who wish to keep the timber these start at £300 for man and saw. I will come out and cut single trunks at a reduced rate but there is a distance limit. Consider this, in the right conditions we can mill 5 cubes + in a day, two of us have done 8, but I was carried home ! Timbers prices seem to vary depending on the area, and they fluctuate, at present a cube of European Oak is fetching around £800. Remember this next time you are wasting all that fuel and chains ring sawing !! My set up time once on site is approx 15-25 mins depending on location etc. Check out the Petersons website there is footage on there of a large Redwood trunk being converted in just 20 mins. To all those who have made enquiries many thanks, I trust that all interested parties find this info helpful. kind regards Andy:001_smile:
  15. Good for making match sticks and clogs that poplar.
